  2. 2. On severe traumatic brain injury : aspects of an intra cranial pressure-targeted therapy based on the Lund concept

    Author : Magnus Olivecrona; Lars-Owe D Koskinen; Bertil Romner; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; severe traumatic brain injury; ICP targeted therapy; ICP; hemicraniectomy; seizures; prostacyclin; microdialysis; outcome; S100B; NSE; Neurosurgery; Neurokirurgi;

    Abstract : Severe Traumatic Brain Injury (sTBI) is a major cause of mortality and morbidity. At the Department of Neurosurgery Umeå University Hospital subjects with sTBI are treated with an intracranial pressure (ICP) guided therapy based on physiological principles, aiming to optimise the microcirculation of the brain so avoiding secondary brain injuries.     Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; traumatic brain injury; brain oedema; fluid therapy; blood-brain barrier;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury and bacterial meningitis may at a glance appear as two different disease entities. The host reaction, however, to both trauma and infection involves a strong inflammatory response, with the classical symptomology of rubor, tumor, calor, dolor et functio laesa. READ MORE

  4. 4. Neurointensive Care of Children with Severe Traumatic Brain Injury : Studies of barbiturate coma treatment, intracranial compliance, pressure autoregulation and optimal cerebral perfusion pressure

    Author : Fartein Velle; Per Enblad; Shruti Agrawal; Uppsala universitet; []

    Abstract : Traumatic brain injury (TBI) is among the most common causes of death and acquired disability during childhood. Management guidelines for pediatric patients are usually extrapolated from adults. Specific pediatric studies are warranted to improve the TBI management in children. READ MORE

  5. 5. Cerebral circulation and the sympathetic nervous system in patients with traumatic brain injury or subarachnoid hemorrhage

    Author : Silvana Naredi; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : traumatic brain injury; brain edema; microcirculation; intracranial pressure; epo-prostenol; norepinephrine; subarachnoid hemorrhage; sympathetic nervous system; clonidine;

    Abstract : Maintenance of adequate cerebral microcirculation is necessary to avoid cerebral ischemia after severe traumatic brain injury and non-traumatic subarachnoid hemorrhage. After severe traumatic brain injury the blood-brain-barrier is disrupted and transcapillary leakage will contribute to the development of vasogenic brain edema. READ MORE
