1. Verification of Dose Calculation Algorithms in Treatment Planning Systems for External Radiation Therapy: A Monte Carlo Approach
Abstract : This thesis presents a new verification concept, the virtual accelerator, for dose calculation algorithms used in treatment planning systems (TPSs) for external beam radiotherapy. The algorithm input data required to implement a treatment unit in the TPS are generated by Monte Carlo simulations as are the beam reference data needed for the subsequent evaluation of the dose calculation algorithm. 2. Beam Modelling for Treatment Planning of Scanned Proton Beams
Abstract : Scanned proton beams offer the possibility to take full advantage of the dose deposition properties of proton beams, i.e. the limited range and sharp peak at the end of the range, the Bragg peak. READ MORE

3. Implementation of MRI gel dosimetry in radiation therapy
Abstract : Gel dosimetry was used together with magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) to measure three-dimensional absorbed dose distributions in radiation therapy. Two different dosimeters were studied: ferrous- and monomer gel, based on the principles of radiation-induced oxidation and polymerisation, respectively. READ MORE

4. Quality Assurance in Radiotherapy - Development and evaluation of new tools for improved patient safety
Abstract : Preparation for radiotherapy is a complex procedure that involves many different technologies and groups of professionals. The rapid development and introduction of new technologies throughout the last decade have made it possible to deliver highly conformal, individually-shaped dose distributions with high accuracy. 5. A Novel Approach for Radiotherapy and Radiosurgery Treatment Planning Accounting for High-Grade Glioma Invasiveness into Normal Tissue
Abstract : High-grade gliomas (HGGs) are a type of malignant brain cancer, which include glioblastomas (GBMs). In adults, GBM is the most common malignant primary brain cancer. Attempts to treat patients with GBMs have been conducted for over a century, but the prognosis has only marginally improved. READ MORE
