11. High Temperature Tribology of Aluminium : Effect of Lubrication and Surface Engineering on Friction and Material Transfer
Abstract : Lightweight design for automotive applications has been pursued for several decades and continues to increase. The main driving forces are new and increasingly stringent emission regulations as well as the increasing popularity of electric, or hybrid, vehicles where the increased weight of the batteries need to be compensated by light weight structures. 12. The influence of microstructure on mechanical and tribological properties of lamellar and compacted irons in engine applications
Abstract : Lamellar graphite iron (LGI) is commonly used in diesel engine applications such as piston rings–cylinder liner where an excellent combination of physical and tribological properties is essential to avoid scuffing and bore polishing issues. The excellent tribological behaviour of LGI alloys is related to the graphite lamellas, which act as solid lubricant agents by feeding onto the tribosurfaces under sliding conditions. READ MORE

13. Tribology of elastomeric seal materials
Abstract : Elastomers are the most commonly used materials for various sealing applications owing to their low modulus of elasticity, large elongation-at-break, and high Poisson's ratio. Most seals operate in the presence of lubricants; therefore the sealing elastomeroil interaction plays an important role in determining the tribological performance of elastomers. READ MORE

14. On the role of microstructure in wear of nanostructured carbide-free bainitic steels
Abstract : The significance of steel production for the development of sustainable society and economy is immense. Today’s fast growing global economy poses an increasing demand for improving the properties of steel. READ MORE

15. Ionic lubricants : Molecular features and surface protection mechanisms
Abstract : In this thesis ionic liquids (ILs) are investigated as prospective candidates for lubrication. Three custom synthesized phosphonium orthoborate type ILs were extensively studied from the prospective of molecular structuring both in bulk and at the interface and from the prospective of their lubricating performance as neat lubricants and as additives in oils.
