  1. 6. The role of the serotonergic system and the effects of antidepressants during brain development examined using in vivo PET imaging and in vitro receptor binding

    Author : Stal Saurav Shrestha; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Serotonin (5-HT) and the serotonergic system, which includes the serotonin transporter (SERT) and the two G protein-coupled 5-HT1A and 5-HT1B receptors, are implicated in the pathophysiology and treatment of several neuropsychiatric disorders including major depressive disorder (MDD) and anxiety. Two classes of antidepressants—selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors (SSRIs), which block SERT, and tricyclic antidepressants (TCAs), which block several monoamine transporters—alter 5-HT levels and modulate the serotonergic system. 2. 7. Drug use and side effects in the elderly : findings from the Kungsholmen project

    Author : Galina Passare; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Drug utilisation; elderly; side effects; adverse drug reactions; hypotension; hyponatremia; hypernatremia; hypokalaemia; hyperkalaemia; hyperglycemia; renal insufficiency; self-reported symptoms; antidepressants; anxiolytics;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to find occurrence of drug side effects in the elderly by studying the association between changes in clinical parameters and prevalence of self-reported symptoms and the use of drugs in an elderly population. The studies were performed in the Kungsholmen project, a longitudinal population based study of aging and dementia in Stockholm. READ MORE

  3. 8. The treatment of depression in clinical practice : a public health perspective

    Author : Svante Henriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Depression; treatment of depression; antidepressant medication; public health;

    Abstract : Depression is a major public health problem with a reported point prevalence of 5%. Depressive illness causes great suffering and disability. Effective treatment with antidepressant drugs has been available for more than 40 years. READ MORE

  4. 9. Immobilized stationary phases for capillary gas chromatography

    Author : Jan Buijten; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : Capillary gas chromatography columns coated with silicone gums as stationary phases proved to have a higher thermal stability than columns coated with silicone oils. The temperature stability of a stationary phase film can, however, be further increased when the phase is, in situ, immobilized either by polymerization of the silicone or by freeradical cross-linking. 5. 10. PET studies of the serotonin system in major depression and its treatment

    Author : Mikael Tiger; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The serotonin system has been implicated in major depression since the 1960s, mainly based on the serotonin enhancing properties of antidepressants. Positron emission tomography, PET, is the in vivo molecular imaging method with the best spatial resolution. READ MORE
