  1. 11. Immunological aspects of maternal-foetal interactions in mice

    Author : Marie Arvola; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Neonatal mice; milk; placenta; fetal rejection; IgG; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental Biology; miljömedicinsk utvecklingsbiologi;

    Abstract : Mammalian pregnancy is an immunological paradox. The foetus, which expresses both paternal and maternal cell-surface molecules, has to be protected from rejection by the maternal immune system. At the same time, the mother has to have an efficient immune defence and must provide her offspring with antibodies. READ MORE

  2. 12. Therapeutic opportunities of alpha-1-microglobulin A study in placenta, blood, skin and eye

    Author : Martin Cederlund; Infektionsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; reactive oxygen species; hemoglobin; myeloperoxidase; oxidative stress; α1-microglobulin;

    Abstract : This thesis describes functional studies of the human protein alpha-1-microglobulin (A1M), with the aim of exploring its usefulness as a therapeutic agent in diseases where oxidative stress is a prominent feature. A1M is a 26 kDa plasma and tissue protein with reductase activity and radical- and heme-binding antioxidative functions. READ MORE

  3. 13. Monoamine transporters in female human reproduction

    Author : Barbara Bottalico; Lund Obstetrik och gynekologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; PMAT; VMAT2; OCT; NET; in-situ hybridization histochemistry; decidualization; human endometrium; placenta; Medicine human and vertebrates ; Monoamine transporters; preeclampsia; histamine; Medicin människa och djur ;

    Abstract : The present study explored the gene and protein expression of the monoamine transporters in human endometrium throughout the menstrual cycle, in early decidua and in placentas from normal as well as preeclamptic pregnancies using in-situ hybridization, real time-PCR, immunohistochemistry and primary tissue cultures. Four distinguishable patterns were observed in the endometrium over the menstrual cycle: (1) epithelial expression of norepinephrine transporter (NET) mRNA, (2) Stromal co- expression of vesicular monoamine transporter 2 (VMAT2) and plasma membrane monoamine transporter (PMAT) mRNAs with maximal intensity in the proliferative phase; (3) increasing epithelial expression of VMAT2 mRNA with a maximum in the late secretory phase; (4) stromal expression of extra-neuronal monoamine transporter (EMT) mRNA with a peak in the early secretory phase. 4. 14. Expression and regulation of vasoactive substances, sex steroids and their receptors in placenta during normal pregnancy and preeclampsia

    Author : Josefine Nasiell; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Despite intense studies preeclampsia remains enigmatic and a major cause of maternal and fetal morbidity and mortality. It is now widely accepted that the placenta has a central role in preeclampsia; delivery of the placenta is the only known cure. READ MORE

  5. 15. The Role of Mammalian Target of Rapamycin in the Regulation of Amino Acid Transporters in the Human Placenta

    Author : Sara Roos; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : amino acids; fetal growth restriction; human; mammalian target of rapamycin; membrane transporters; metabolism; placenta; pregnancy; system A; system L; taurine transporter;

    Abstract : Abnormal fetal growth, which is associated with both perinatal morbidity as well as metabolic diseases in adulthood, is an important clinical problem affecting as many as 15% of all pregnancies. However, to this date, there is no specific treatment of this condition. READ MORE
