  1. 1. Tumor Necrosis Factor-alpha as a target cytokine in vascular disease

    Author : Lena Brånén; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; apoptosis; cell replication; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; spindle-shaped; epithelioid; smooth muscle cells; periadventitial cuff injury; sTNF-R1; bone marrow transplantation; chimeric fusion protein; atherogenic diet; ApoE; TNF-a; genetically altered mice; en face preparation; atherosclerosis; neointimal hyperplasia;

    Abstract : Inflammation plays an important role in atherosclerosis. One of the most potent pro-inflammatory cytokines is tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-a), a cytokine identified to have a pathogenic role in chronic inflammatory diseases such as rheumatoid arthritis (RA). READ MORE

  2. 2. Studies of the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

    Author : Diana Karpman; Lund Pediatrik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pediatri; Pediatrics; tumor necrosis factor; interleukin 6; von Willebrand factor; apoptosis; lipopolysaccharide; shiga-like toxin; Escherichia coli O157:H7; Hemolytic uremic syndrome; thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura; Urology; nephrology; Urologi; nefrologi;

    Abstract : This study investigated the pathogenesis of hemolytic uremic syndrome (HUS) and thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (TTP). (1) The relative roles of lipopolysaccharide and Shiga-like toxin-2 were studied in a mouse model of Escherichia coli O157:H7 infection. READ MORE

  3. 3. Oxygen delivery and mitochondrial dysfunction as assessed by microdialysis during interventions in experimental sepsis

    Author : Magnus von Seth; Lipscey Miklós; Jan Sjölin; Mats Eriksson; Jukka Takala; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sepsis; animal models; microdialysis; endotoxin; Escherichia coli; tigecycline; doxycycline; albumins; capillary leak syndrome; lactic acid; oxygen delivery; multiple organ failure; mitochondria; tumor necrosis factor alpha; interleukin-6; cyanides; ouabain; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : Early administration of broad-spectrum antibiotics is the first goal in sepsis treatment. Besides from bacteriostatic/bactericidal effects, some antibiotics may also modify the host´s response to infection. The novel antibiotic tigecycline may exert such properties; however, this property has not been evaluated in large-animal trials. READ MORE

  4. 4. The involvement of the TNF-alpha system in skeletal muscle in response to marked overuse

    Author : Lina Renström; Sture Forsgren; Per Stål; Håkan Alfredson; Eva Ekblad; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TNF-alpha; TNFR1; TNFR2; muscle damage; myositis; peritendinous tissue; tendinopathy;

    Abstract : Painful conditions having the origin within the musculoskeletal system is a common cause for people to seek medical care. Between 20-40% of all visits to the primal care in Sweden are coupled to pain from the musculoskeletal system. Muscle pain and impaired muscle function can be caused by muscles being repetitively overused and/or via heavy load. READ MORE

  5. 5. Regulation of TNF-alpha : implications for health and disease

    Author : Tiina Skoog; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Adhesion molecules; adipocyte; atherosclerosis; DNase I HS site; EMSA; IMT; polymorphism; TNF-alpha;

    Abstract : Tumor necrosis factor-alpha (TNF-alpha) is a proinflammatory cytokine, which is implicated in some metabolic disorders and may play a role in the development of cardiovascular disease. When healthy 50-year-old men were studied, the plasma TNF-alpha concentration was associated with systolic and diastolic blood pressure, degree of alimentary lipaemia, plasma VLDL triglyceride and LDL cholesterol concentrations, peak LDL particle size and all measured cell adhesion molecules.
