11. Early Blood Cell Formation "in sickness and health, ´till death do us part"
Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC), the ancestors of all blood cells, have the ability to give rise to mature effector cells through a series of developmental steps. This is a tightly regulated, though a highly dynamic process: on the one hand, dysregulation in steady-state could lead to under- or overgrowth of certain blood cell lineages, whereas, on the other hand, demands for certain mature blood cells can change dramatically in cases like bleeding and infections. 12. Regional fluxes of tissue plasminogen activator in porcine endotoxemia
Abstract : Formation of fibrin clots in the microcirculation during severe sepsis contributes to organ failure, frequently involving the lungs and the splanchnic organs. Tissue type plasminogen activator, tPA, is the key activator of intravascular fibrinolysis with plasminogen activator inhibitor type-1, PAI-1, as its main inhibitor. READ MORE

15. Hematopoietic stem cells: c-mpl and TNF receptor function
Abstract : Hematopoietic stem cells (HSC) are crucial to life. Daily and throughout the life span of an individual they are responsible for replacing approximately 10(12) mature blood cells. Mature cells are, for example, required for transportation of oxygen, defense against infections and to stop bleeding. READ MORE
