  1. 1. Stromal collagens in colorectal cancer and in colorectal liver metastases : tumour biological implications and a source for novel tumour markers

    Author : Hanna Nyström; Malin Sund; Peter Naredi; Per Sandström; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Colorectal cancer; colorectal liver metastases; tumour marker; stroma; type IV collagen; metastatic growth pattern; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Background: Colorectal cancer (CRC) remains one of the leading causes of cancer-related mortality. About 50 % of patients with CRC will develop subsequent liver metastases (CLM). The survival for untreated CLM is only a few months and liver resection provides the only chance for a lasting cure. READ MORE

  2. 2. Examining the prostate stroma and vasculature : importance and potential as targets for therapy

    Author : Anna Johansson; Anders Bergh; Arne Östman; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Prostate cancer; castration therapy; vasculature; stroma; the angiopoietins; the PDGF-receptors; mast cells; Pathology; Patologi;

    Abstract : Background. Recent studies in cancer research have focused on the reciprocal interaction between cancer cells and their microenvironment. Tumour growth is angiogenesis dependent and the rate of angiogenesis correlates with a poor prognosis in many different cancers. READ MORE

  3. 3. Stromal components and micro-RNAs as biomarkers in pancreatic cancer

    Author : Oskar Franklin; Malin Sund; Daniel Öhlund; Ola Billing; Marco Del Chiaro; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Pancreatic cancer; stroma; basement membrane; tumour markers; type IV collagen; endostatin; osteopontin; tenascin c; hyaluronan; CD44; micro-RNA; kirurgi; Surgery;

    Abstract : Background Pancreatic ductal adenocarcinoma (PDAC) patients have the poorest 5-year survival rates of all cancer forms. It is difficult to diagnose at early disease stages, tumour relapse after surgery is common, and current chemotherapies are ineffective. READ MORE

  4. 4. The role of stroma-derived substances in breast cancer progression and their function as tumour markers

    Author : Malin Jansson; Malin Sund; Daniel Öhlund; Ola Billing; Emma Niméus; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Breast cancer; perlecan; type IV collagen; type I collagen; extracellular matrix; tumour biomarkers; Surgery; kirurgi;

    Abstract : Background: In 2020, more than 2,260,000 women were diagnosed with breast cancer. Most patients are cured with surgery and adjuvant treatment, but despite that, approximately 700,000 women die of the disease every year. The historical focus on breast cancer progression has been on the malignant epithelial cell. READ MORE

  5. 5. MESENCHYMAL STEM- AND STROMAL CELLS IN BONE MARROW AND OSTEOSARCOMA

    Author : Jan Claas Brune; Stamcellscentrum (SCC); []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; mesenchymal stem cells; stromal cells; bone marrow stem cells; tumour stroma; stroma-directed anti-tumour therapy; osteosarcoma;

    Abstract : Primary mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) play a central role in bone marrow (BM) and during haematopoiesis. Yet, the exact phenotype and spatial distribution of primary MSC in the human BM are unknown. Their cultured progeny are promising candidates for clinical applications. READ MORE
