  1. 1. Mitigation of urban storm water runoff through application of computational fluid dynamics

    Author : Kaj Pettersson; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microstructure; infiltration; Green roof; CFD; wind-driven rain; building facade.; lattice Boltzmann;

    Abstract : This thesis covers computational methods for improving the ability of green roofs to mitigate storm water runoff in urban environments. Roofs with living vegetation, known as green roofs, have been used for this purpose however quantification of their ability to slow and stop rainfall runoff has not been undertaken to a large degree. 2. 2. Uncovering Ocean Mixing near Rough Bathymetry : Using Broadband Acoustics

    Author : Julia C. Muchowski; Christian Stranne; Martin Jakobsson; Lars Umlauf; Lars Arneborg; Fer Ilker; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; ocean mixing; diapycnal mixing; broadband acoustics; turbulence microstructure; rough bathymetry; stratified flow over obstacles; observations of turbulent mixing; Baltic Sea research; maringeologi; Marine Geology;

    Abstract : Ocean mixing related to rough bathymetry is highly dynamic and exhibits large spatial and temporal variability. Therefore, established in-situ methods as well as numerical models often lack the resolution to capture this type of mixing. In this thesis, acoustics are used to observe, map and quantify stratified mixing at unprecedented resolution. READ MORE

  3. 3. Some aspects of convection as well as graphite and carbide formations during casting

    Author : Fareed Ashraf Khan; Michael Vynnycky; Pär Jönsson; Bo Rogberg; Hasse Fredriksson; Jessica Elfsberg; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; carbides; heat treatment; cast iron; ball bearing steel; casting; cooling rate; structure analysis; nodule distribution; melt stirring; nuclei; karbider; värmebehanding; gjutjärn; kullagerstål; gjutning; kylningshastighet; strukturanalys; nodulefördelning; smältrörelse; kärnor.; Metallurgical process science; Metallurgisk processvetenskap;

    Abstract : It is an established fact that segregation during casting affects the physical properties of carbon-based ferro alloys; this motivates the study of the segregation behaviour of carbon and carbide-forming solute elements. In this context, this thesis investigates two different situations: the effects of cooling rate and turbulence on the precipitation behaviour of the graphite nodules in nodular cast iron; the nature of carbide precipitation in a bearing steel grade and the effects of subsequent soaking on these carbides.
