  1. 16. Mechanisms by which variants in the TCF7L2 gene increase the risk of developing Type 2 diabetes

    Author : Yuedan Zhou; diabetes och endokrinologi Genomik; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; TCF7L2; rs7903146; Type 2 diabetes; β cell function; β cell survival; insulin secretion; proinsulin synthesis; proinsulin-to-insulin conversion; insulin maturation; open chromain; exon skipping; p53; TP53INP1; ISL1; MAFA; NEUROD1; PDX1; NKX6.1; PCSK1; PCSK2; SLC30A8; GWAS.;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a heterogeneous disease with a multifactorial aetiology comprising of genetic and environmental factors. The common variant most highly associated with T2DM known to date is a SNP rs7903146 in the TCF7L2 gene. However, the role TCF7L2 plays in the development of T2DM was unclear. READ MORE

  2. 17. Semi-mechanistic models of glucose homeostasis and disease progression in type 2 diabetes

    Author : Steve Choy; Maria Kjellsson; Mats Karlsson; Willem de Winter; Andrea Mari; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; pharmacokinetics; pharmacodynamics; pharmacometrics; glucose homeostasis; insulin; type 2 diabetes; obesity; weight; visceral adipose tissue; HbA1c; non-linear mixed effects; modelling; disease progression; ZDSD rats; Farmaceutisk vetenskap; Pharmaceutical Science;

    Abstract : Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is a metabolic disorder characterized by consistently high blood glucose, resulting from a combination of insulin resistance and reduced capacity of β-cells to secret insulin. While the exact causes of T2DM is yet unknown, obesity is known to be a major risk factor as well as co-morbidity for T2DM. READ MORE

  3. 18. Pharmacoepidemiologic Studies of Diabetes Mellitus - with special reference to - Glucose Control and Prognosis of Type 2 Diabetes

    Author : Jonny Olsson; Samhällsmedicin; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; diabetology; secreting systems; Endocrinology; cohort study; longitudinal study; cross-sectional study; mortality; diabetes mellitus; Pharmacoepidemiology; prevalence; type 2 diabetes; diabetes costs; short-term sick-leave; premature retirement; production losses; inpatient care; glycaemic control; fasting blood glucose; oral antihyperglycaemic agents; sulphonylurea; metformin; insulin; combination treatment; drug utilization; prescribed daily doses; safety; effectiveness; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : The efficacy and safety of antihyperglycaemic drugs have been evaluated in one American and one British randomized clinical trial, which have given contradictory results. The positive results of the latter may be more convincing as it included a greater number of patients and as its duration was longer. READ MORE

  4. 19. Common variants in genes regulating free fatty acid metabolism and risk of type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease

    Author : Martin Carlsson; Malmö Institutionen för kliniska vetenskaper; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cardiovascular disease; free fatty acids; genetics; UCP1; beta3-adrenergic receptor; beta2-adrenergic receptor; type 2 diabetes mellitus; FABP2; stroke; Endocrinology; secreting systems; diabetology; Endokrinologi; sekretion; diabetologi;

    Abstract : Abstract The present study evaluated genetic and metabolic factors influencing the risk for type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular disease (CVD) with special reference to increased concentrations of free fatty acids (FFA) in 1174 Swedish diabetic and nondiabetic subjects. Common polymorphisms in the fatty acid binding protein 2 (FABP2), the B2-adrenergic receptor (B2-AR), the B3 -adrenergic receptor (B3-AR) and the uncoupling protein 1 (UCP-1) genes were related to anthropometric and metabolic variables. 5. 20. Oral Health and Diabetes : Studies on health and oral self-care in subjects with type 2 diabetes

    Author : Gun Sandberg; Dorthe Holst; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Medical sciences; health-related quality of life; type 2 diabetes; oral health; oral self-care; peripheral neuropathy; MEDICIN OCH VÅRD; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; omvårdnadsforskning med medicinsk inriktning; Caring Sciences;

    Abstract : Oral manifestations have been reported as risk factors for diabetes mellitus, but diabetes has also attracted the attention as part of the influence on oral disease. The aims of this thesis were to evaluate several aspects of oral health among type 2 diabetic subjects in relation to various diabetes-related variables and to health-related quality of life (HRQL).
