  1. 21. In-situ monitoring of laser powder bed fusion applied to defect detection

    Author : Claudia de Andrade Schwerz; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; defect detection; productivity; nickel-based superalloy; process monitoring; pores; powder bed fusion; spatter; defect mitigation; mechanical properties; lack of fusion; melt pool; Additive manufacturing;

    Abstract : Additive manufacturing technologies, particularly laser powder bed fusion (LPBF), have received much attention recently due to their numerous advantages over conventional manufacturing methods. However, the use of LPBF is still quite restricted, mainly due to two factors: its typically low productivity, which makes the technology less competitive in applications with moderate to high production volumes, and its limited reliability, particularly relevant for applications where high performance is required from the materials. 2. 22. Hybrid fiber preform fabrication using CO laser heating

    Author : Taras Oriekhov; Michael Fokine; Cruz José; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Preform; CO laser; silicon-core fiber; semiconductor-core fiber; specialty fiber; optical fiber.; Optik och fotonik; Optics and Photonics;

    Abstract : This thesis describes the development of a new prototyping technique for specialty optical fibers and covers all the fabrication steps from preform to fiber. The technique allows to produce fibers of a custom core structure and material composition, mainly focusing on semiconductor core fibers. READ MORE

  3. 23. Reaction to fire performance of wood and other building products

    Author : Lazaros Tsantaridis; KTH; []
    Keywords : building products; charring of wood; cone calorimeter; fire retardant treated wood; fire tests; ignitability; mass loss; rate of heat release;

    Abstract : The theme of this thesis is the reaction to fire performanceof wood and other building products, andparticularly thematerial fire properties time to ignition, rate of heat releaseand smoke production. These properties have been measured by asmall-scale fire test method, the Cone Calorimeter, andpresented for different types of building products. READ MORE

  4. 24. Low Frequency Acoustic Excitation and Laser Sensing of Vibration as a Tool for Remote Characterization of Thin Sheets

    Author : Etienne Mfoumou; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; nondestructive testing; remote acoustics; slow dynamics; nonequilibrium dynamics; resonance frequency; material characterization; vibration-based technique; fracture toughness;

    Abstract : There is a need to monitor the existence and effects of damage in structural materials. Bulk components provide a much publicized example, but the need exists in a variety of other structures, such as layered materials used in food packaging industries. READ MORE

  5. 25. Towards single Ce ion detection in a bulk crystal for the development of a single-ion qubit readout scheme

    Author : Ying Yan; Atomfysik; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Fysicumarkivet A:2013:Yan; Ultra-violet laser spectroscopy; Single ion detection; Rare-earth-ion-doped crystals; Quantum computing; Laser stabilisation;

    Abstract : The work presented in this thesis was concerned with investigating the relevant spectroscopic properties of Ce ions randomly doped in an Y2SiO5 crystal at low temperatures (around 4 K), in order to develop a technique and an experimental set-up to detect the fluorescence photons emitted by a single Ce ion. The aim of the work was to determine whether a single Ce ion (referred to as the readout ion) can be used as a local probe to sense the quantum state of a neighbouring single-ion qubit via a state-selective interaction between the readout and qubit ion.
