  1. 1. FtsH metalloproteases and their pseudo-proteases in the chloroplast envelope of Arabidopsis thaliana

    Author : Laxmi S. Mishra; Christiane Funk; Magnus Wolf-Watz; Catherine de Vitry; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis thaliana; AAA-ATPases; abscisic acid; chloroplast; drought; embryo-lethal; FtsH metalloprotease; intrinsic water-use efficiency WUEi ; leaf variegation; outdoor conditions; oxidative stress; plastid biogenesis; proteomics; protein import; root-associated bacterial communities seedlings; Biochemistry; biokemi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology; biology; biologi;

    Abstract : By cleaving peptide bonds, proteases either activate or degrade proteins and maintain protein quality control in response to various developmental stimuli and environmental factors. My work has focused on elucidating the role of the filamentation temperature sensitive protein H (FtsH) proteases. READ MORE

  2. 2. Plant-animal interactions and seed output of two insectpollinated herbs

    Author : Anna R. Waites; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; plant reproduction; pollen limitation; pollinator behaviour; heterostyly; seed predation; Lythrum salicaria; Pedicularis palustris; stigma receptivity; self-pollen; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : I combined comparative and experimental studies in the field and in the greenhouse to examine factors influencing reproductive success in two insect-pollinated herbs, the tristylous, selfincompatible perennial Lythrum salicaria and the self-compatible, biennial Pedicularis palustris. More specifically, I explored (i) the effects of plant population characteristics on the intensity and outcome of interactions with pollinators and seed predators, (ii) whether flower morphology affects duration of stigma receptivity, and (iii) whether damage-induced reduction in floral display reduces pollinator visitation and increases pollen limitation. 3. 3. Ecosystem response to dam removal

    Author : Anna G.C. Lejon; Christer Nilsson; Birgitta Malm Renöfält; Emily Stanley; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : dam removal; macroinvertebrates; plant species; plant succession; restoration; riparian zone; sediment deposition; species richness; Sweden; biology; biologi; ekologisk botanik; Ecological Botany; hydrologi; Hydrology;

    Abstract : This thesis aims to improve our understanding of how riverine ecosystems respond to dam removal. Riverine and particularly riparian ecosystems are among the most variable and important features of all landscapes. READ MORE

  4. 4. Plant colonization of oak plantations - the interactive effects of local environment and land-use history

    Author : Karin Valtinat; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nitrogen mineralization; Phosphorus; Plant ecology; Växtekologi; Soil acidity; Seed sowing; Dispersal limitation; Species diversity; Indicator species analysis; Functional groups; Succession; Understory vegetation; Land-use history; Temperate forest;

    Abstract : In Europe, only small fragments of deciduous woodlands remain intact and species dependent on this ecosystem have declined. In southern Sweden, a shifting trend during the 20th century, with more afforestations on former arable land, resulted in new oak stands. These new stand are either on former arable fields or on continuously forested land. READ MORE

  5. 5. Resource economy of carnivorous plants: Interactions between prey capture and plant performance in three subarctic Pinguicula species

    Author : Magnus Thorén; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plant ecology; income breeder; capital breeder; supplementary feeding; reproductive effort; life-history; cost of reproduction; Växtekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, I have studied in situ the resource economy of the three carnivorous plant species Pinguicula alpina, P. villosa and P. vulgaris in a subarctic environment. The prey capture varied among individual plants, years and species. READ MORE
