  1. 21. Human leukocyte antigens with special reference to association and linkage in multiple sclerosis

    Author : Anna Fogdell-Hahn; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : HLA; MHC; multiple sclerosis; narcolepsy; lod score; linkage.;

    Abstract : The polymorphism of HLA (human leukocyte antigen) is extensive. Allelic variation has previously been detected by cellular and serological methods. Today a variety of genomic typing techniques have been developed, which give higher resolution and a possibility to detect single nucleotide variations. READ MORE

  2. 22. Human papillomavirus testing and its application in cervical cancer prevention

    Author : Anna Söderlund Strand; Malmö Klinisk mikrobiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES;

    Abstract : SUMMARY Because of the strong causal relationship between persistent infections of human papillomavirus (HPV) and cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN) and cancer, HPVtesting has been proposed for improvement of cervical screening programs, including triaging and follow-up after treatment for CIN. We developed two new methods for HPV-testing with genotyping: A high-throughput HPV genotyping method that uses mass spectrometry for detection of the products of type-specific mass extend reactions, and a method with particularly sensitive detection of a broad spectrum of HPV-types, also in the case of multiple infections, that uses type-specific probes coupled to fluorescent beads for detection on the Luminex platform. Abstract : Clostridioides difficile infections primarily affect elderly, hospitalised patients treated with antibiotics and are among the most common healthcare-related infections. This thesis aimed to improve the understanding of the best prevention strategies for this disease, particularly in a Swedish setting. READ MORE

  5. 25. Genotypic and phenotypic characterisation of Neisseria gonorrhoeae

    Author : Magnus Unemo; Bengt Wretlind; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICINE; MEDICIN;

    Abstract : The bacterium Neisseria gonorrhoeae (the gonococcus) is the aetiological agent of gonorrhoea, which remains a major sexually transmitted infection/disease (STI/STD) worldwide. The incidence of gonorrhoea was previously high in many countries, Sweden included. The incidence in Sweden culminated in 1970 with 487 cases per 100,000 inhabitants. READ MORE
