  1. 1. Structural studies on the integral membrane protein, ubiquinol oxidase from Escherichia coli

    Author : Jeff Abramson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Biochemistry; crystal structure; ubiquinol oxidase; membrane protein; oxidases; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Biokemi; biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : Heme-copper oxidases are redox-driven proton pumps that couple the reduction of molecular oxygen to water with the vectorial translocation of protons across the membrane. The proton gradient generated by heme-copper oxidases and the other members of the aerobic respiratory chain is ultimately used to drive the synthesis of ATP. READ MORE

  2. 2. Oxidative stress and mitochondrial function : role of ubiquinol as antioxidant

    Author : Patrik Andrée; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Over the last three decades it has been established that biquinone (coenzyme Q), in addition to its function as an electron and proton carrier in the respiratory chain, acts in its reduced form (ubiquinol) as an antioxidant. The main theme of this thesis is a study of the antioxidant function of ubiquinol in preparations of beef heart submitochondrial particles, which consist of inverted vesicular fragments of the inner mitochondrial membrane. 3. 3. Paramagnetic states of diiron carboxylate proteins

    Author : Nina Voevodskaya; Astrid Gräslund; Peter Brzezinski; Howard Dalton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; electron paramagnetic resonance; diiron carboxilate proteins; ribonucleotide reductase; alternative oxidase; Biophysics; Biofysik;

    Abstract : Diiron carboxylate proteins constitute an important class of metall-containing enzymes. These proteins perform a multitude of reactions in biological systems that normally involve activation of molecular oxygen at the diiron site. READ MORE

  4. 4. Structural and Functional Studies of Diiron Carboxylate Proteins

    Author : Pål Stenmark; Pär Nordlund; Howard Dalton; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Biochemistry; Biokemi;

    Abstract : Iron is essential to all life; it is a vital component of many proteins in humans as well as plants and bacteria. Because of the ability of iron to activate oxygen, it is often found in proteins that interact with oxygen in some way. READ MORE

  5. 5. Biochemical and Immunological Investigation of Quinol-Cytochrome c Reductase

    Author : Ib Mendel-Hartvig; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : In order to understand the mechanism of electron and proton transport within mitochondrial ubiquinol-cytochrome c reductase (Complex III), we have undertaken a biochemical and immunological investigation regarding the structure, function and topology of its subunits. A major part of this investigation deals with the two largest subunits, the so-called core proteins, which make up approximately 50 percent of the total Complex III protein. READ MORE
