1. Footwall stability in SLC mining
Abstract : This thesis is based on a case study of the Kiirunavaara sublevel cave (SLC) mine. It focuses on footwall stability and damage development in the mining infrastructure on mine scale. Damage to the infrastructure is mappable for the full height of the footwall by access through decommissioned infrastructure associated with earlier mining stages. READ MORE

2. Development of a Methodology for Dynamic Testing of Rock Support : Field Tests and Numerical Analysis
Abstract : The increasing mining depth in the Luossavaara-Kiirunavaara Aktiebolag (LKAB) mine located in the northern part of Sweden leads to higher stress magnitudes, resulting in increased seismic activity and more seismically-induced damage. The effectiveness of various ground support systems under dynamic loading conditions has therefore become of prime interest to LKAB for successful and safe mining at deep levels. READ MORE

3. Rock mass behavior under hydropower embankment dams with focus on fracture erosion and rock mass stability
Abstract : In Sweden there are about 190 large hydropower dams of varying age. According to the definition by the International Commission of Large Dams (ICOLD), if the height of the dam exceeds 15 m it is referred as large. Majority of these dams are of embankment type. READ MORE

4. Strength and deformability of fractured rocks
Abstract : This thesis presents a systematic numerical modeling framework to simulate the stress-deformation and coupled stress-deformation-flow processes by performing uniaxial and biaxial compressive tests on fractured rock models with considering the effects of different loading conditions, different loading directions (anisotropy), and coupled hydro-mechanical processes for evaluating strength and deformability behavior of fractured rocks. By using code UDEC of discrete element method (DEM), a series of numerical experiments were conducted on discrete fracture network models (DFN) at an established representative elementary volume (REV), based on realistic geometrical and mechanical data of fracture systems from field mapping at Sellafield, UK. 5. Analysis of rock stress and rock stress measurements with application to Äspö HRL
Abstract : The process of choosing a site for a nuclear waste repository means that many aspects have to be taken into consideration. One of these is that the repository has to be mechanically stable for a long time. The mechanical stability of the rock is very difficult to determine. READ MORE
