  1. 1. Diet and Cardiometabolic Disease : Dietary trends and the impact of diet on diabetes and cardiovascular disease

    Author : Benno Krachler; Bernt Lindahl; Göran Hallmans; Mats Eliasson; Ingvar Bosaeus; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : Medicine; Cross-sectional study; Cross-sectional survey; Diet; Dietary intake; Dietary survey; Food consumption; Food frequency; Milk; MONICA; Sweden; Body Mass Index; Hip circumference; Waist circumference; Diabetes; Metabolic syndrome; Cardiometabolic syndrome; Cardiovascular disease; Erythrocyte Membrane; Fatty Acids; Membrane Lipids; Fatty acid desaturases; Pentadecanoic acid; Heptadecanoic acid; Lignan; Enterolactone; Dietary Fibre; Physical activity; Education; Smoking; Alcohol; Medicin; medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular diseases are the leading cause of death in most industrialised countries and in developing countries the trend in cardiovascular-related deaths is increasing. World-wide, type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) is an emerging cause of disability and premature death. READ MORE

  2. 2. Dietary Fatty Acids, Body Composition and Ectopic Fat : Results from Overfeeding Studies in Humans

    Author : Fredrik Rosqvist; Ulf Risérus; Tommy Cederholm; Ian Macdonald; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Linoleic acid; Palmitic acid; SFA; PUFA; Fatty acids; Body composition; Liver fat; Ectopic fat; Adipose tissue; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate the effects of dietary fatty acids on body composition and ectopic fat in humans, with emphasis on the role of the omega-6 polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) linoleic acid (18:2n-6) and the saturated fatty acid (SFA) palmitic acid (16:0). The overall hypothesis was that linoleic acid would be beneficial compared with palmitic acid during overfeeding, as previously indicated in animals. READ MORE

    Keywords : Linoleic acid; Palmitic acid; PUFA; SFA; n-6 fatty acids; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate how dietary fatty acids affect the risk for cardiometabolic disease, i.e. cardiovascular disease (CVD), type 2 diabetes and obesity. READ MORE

  5. 5. Fatty Acyl Reductases and Fatty Acyl Desaturases. Deciphering the biosynthesis of species-specific moth female sex pheromones from common fatty acids

    Author : Åsa Hagström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Moth; pheromone; insect; evolution; fatty acyl desaturase; fatty acyl reductase; endoplasmic reticulum; fatty acid biosynthesis; GFP; heterologous expression; phylogeny; cell factory; lepidoptera;

    Abstract : Moths (Lepidoptera) are dependent on female produced pheromones, chemical signals, for attracting a mate. Pheromones are most commonly made up by saturated and/or unsaturated fatty acid derived alcohols, acetates, and/or aldehydes that are produced by a set of enzymes in the female pheromone gland.
