  1. 21. Inflammatory mechanisms in experimental CNS trauma

    Author : Jonas Isaksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Genetics; Spinal cord injury; brain injury; ICAM-1; P-selectin; iNOS; inflammation; Genetik; Clinical genetics; Klinisk genetik; Pathology; patologi;

    Abstract : Traumatic brain and spinal cord injuries are important causes of premature death and permanentdisability. To improve the treatment of CNS-injured patients increased knowledge about thepathophysiological events that mediate death or dysfunction of nervous tissue is urgently needed. READ MORE

  2. 22. Bowel irradiation: the effects on inflammation and matrix-metalloproteinases

    Author : ANDREA POLISTENA; Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : Radiotherapy; Inflammation; Colorectal Cancer; MMP-7; Matrilysin; Bacteria;

    Abstract : Background and aims: Radiotherapy is a valid treatment in cancer multimodal management but it is affected by severe systemic and local side effects. A murine small bowel model was used for the investigation of inflammatory features and apoptosis of local radiotherapy. READ MORE

  3. 23. Macroalgae in tropical seascapes : regulating factors and functions in the coastal ecosystem

    Author : Gustaf Lilliesköld Sjöö; Max Troell; Nils Kautsky; Lena Kautsky; Alina Szmant; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Macroalgae; Coral reefs; Nutrients; Herbivory; Ecological functions; East Africa; Regulating factors; Anthropogenic influence; Seaweed farming; Bioindicator; marin ekotoxikologi; Marine Ecotoxicology;

    Abstract : Although macroalgae usually are inconspicuous on pristine coral reefs, they often thrive on reefs that are subjected to various types of anthropogenic disturbance. This thesis consists of five papers and investigates how biomass and composition of macroalgal communities on coral reefs are affected by regulating factors, such as nutrient availability, herbivory, substrate availability and hydrodynamic forces. 4. 24. Apoptosis Regulation in Multiple Myeloma

    Author : Lina Dimberg; Helena Jernberg Wiklund; Kenneth Nilsson; Marie Arsenian Henriksson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Biomedicine; multiple myeloma; apoptosis; survival; IFN; Stat1; Stat3; IGF-I; RTK inhibitor; PPP; IAP; Fas CD95; dexamethasone; Biomedicin;

    Abstract : Multiple myeloma (MM) is a virtually incurable B cell malignancy of the bone marrow. One important part of tumor progression and an obstacle for successful therapy is resistance to apoptosis. To combat this resistance, the mechanisms of apoptosis and survival in MM must be better defined. READ MORE

  5. 25. Stress responses of Arabidopsis plants with a varying level of non-photochemical quenching

    Author : Hanna Johansson Jänkänpää; Stefan Jansson; Barbara Demmig-Adams; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Arabidopsis; NPQ; PsbS; photosynthesis; field experiment; metabolomics; Physiological Botany; fysiologisk botanik; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : When light energy input exceeds the capacity for photosynthesis the plant need to dissipate the excess energy and this is done through non-photo-chemical quenching (NPQ). Photochemical quenching (photosynthesis), NPQ and fluorescence are three alternative faiths of excited chlorophylls. PsbS associates to photosystem II and is involved in NPQ. READ MORE
