  1. 1. Environmental impact of alum shale mining in Kvarntorp, Närke, Sweden

    Author : Kristina Åhlgren; Mattias Bäckström; Stefan Karlsson; Roger Herbert; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; alum shale; black shale; oil shale; Kvarntorp; uranium; surface water; groundwater; open pits;

    Abstract : Due to scarcity of imported liquid fuel during World War II, alum shale was mined for oil production in the Kvarntorp area 1942-1966. The shale contains both organic matter (kerogen) and elevated concentrations of trace elements such as molybdenum, nickel, uranium and vanadium. READ MORE

  2. 2. Bacteria and geochemistry in a former uranium open pit mine - mobilization of trace metals

    Author : Frida Edberg; Sara J. M. Holmström; Hans Borg; Stephan M. Kraemer; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : Pseudomonas fluorescens; siderophore; Ranstad; alum shale; iron; pyrosequencing; redox; size fractionation; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Applied Environmental Science; tillämpad miljövetenskap;

    Abstract : In mining areas around the world, chemical and biotic processes have lead to the release of toxic substances, e.g. metals. Microbial processes influence metal speciation, while the chemical environment shapes and controls microbial populations. READ MORE

  3. 3. Primordial radionuclides in pit lakes in Sweden

    Author : Rimon Thomas; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; non-uranium mines; water; sediment; radiochemistry; principle component analysis;

    Abstract : In Sweden, there are many pit lakes, originating from limestone quarries and metal mines, with unknown status in regard to the activity concentration of radionuclides. Such knowledge is generally available only for pit lakes from uranium mining activi-ties. READ MORE

  4. 4. Radon in Groundwater- Influencing Factors and Prediction Methodology for a Swedish Environment

    Author : Kirlna Skeppström; Bo Olofsson; Per Erik Jansson; Jon Petter Gustafsson; Gerhard Barmen; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Radon; Grondwater; GIS; RV method; Multivariate statistics; Water engineering; Vattenteknik;

    Abstract : This thesis presents a method for predicting radon (222Rn) levels in groundwater on a general scale, within an area of approximately 185 x 145 km2. The method applies to Swedish conditions, where 222Rn is the main contributor to natural radioactivity. READ MORE

  5. 5. CHALMEX FS-13 investigations for process implementation

    Author : Thea Lyseid Authen; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Transmutation; SolventExtraction; CHALMEX; Partitioning; GANEX;

    Abstract : From successive neutron absorption by uranium in nuclear reactors, transuranic elements such as neptunium, plutonium, americium and curium are produced. These elements are the main reason for the long-lived, highly radiotoxic and heat-producing nature of spent nuclear fuel. READ MORE
