  1. 1. Vestiges of urban spirit : Isfahan's urban fabric through socio-spatial transformations

    Author : Mohammad Sarraf; Reza Kazemian; Sussan Babaie; Ali Madanipour; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Isfahan; Urban Fabric; Socio-spatial Communication; Urban Identity; Urban Transformation; Urban Renewal; Urban Form; Urban Design; اصفهان ، طراحی شهری ، فرم شهری ، دگرگونی های کالبدی ، هویت شهری ، بازسازی شهری; Civil engineering and architecture; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract : The city of Isfahan, one of the most historic urban settlements in Iran, has undergone dramatic socio-spatial transformations during the recent decades, beginning with the modernization programs of the 1920s. While the urban structure of Isfahan was the outcome of a process over centuries of incremental evolution, a new mode of place making and street patterns was imposed on the historic fabric of the city within the space of only a few decades. 2. 2. Staging urban emergence through collective creativity: Devising an outdoor mobile augmented reality tool

    Author : Hyekyung Imottesjo; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Urban Rules; Emergent processes; outdoor mobile augmented reality; Compact city; Complex adaptive systems; Urban resilience; collaborative design; research-through-design;

    Abstract : The unpredictability of global geopolitical conflicts, economic trends, and impacts of climate change, coupled with an increasing urban population, necessitates a more profound commitment to resilience thinking in urban planning and design. In contrast to top-down planning and designing for sustainability, allowing for emergence to take place seems to contribute to a capacity to better deal with this complex unpredictability, by allowing incremental changes through bottom-up, self-organized adaptation made by diverse actors in the proximity of various social, economical and functional entities in the urban context. 3. 3. Light Design : Outdoor Urban Public Places : - Urban Lighting: Design and Technologies -

    Author : José Nuno Sampaio; Björn-Erik Erlandsson; Izael Pereira Da Silva; KTH; []
    Keywords : Light-based Technologies and Design; Energy Technology; Energiteknik;

    Abstract : Most of the present time outdoor lighting investments seem to be focused on road and automotive traffic facilities or oriented toward safety, security and efficiency. We can identify this in many of the world cities, as a globally spread common practice, where lighting is still highly perceived as a pure matter of quantities’ distribution. 4. 4. Knitted architecture and wind: Designing loosely fitted architectural textiles for interaction with wind

    Author : Erica Hörteborn; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; HUMANIORA; HUMANITIES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Textile architecture; Knitted textiles; Wind performance; Wind; Research by design; Kinetic architecture; Geometric expression; Wind simulation; Architectural design;

    Abstract : Utilising the textile’s ability to adapt to external forces such as the wind could lead to the creation of new design expressions and functional features within architecture. Prompted by architectural potentials of textiles deliberately designed to move and flex, this thesis aims to explore and demonstrate how such knitted textiles could contribute to enriched aesthetic expression and improved performance of architectural elements placed in windy environments. 5. 5. Self Lubrication on the Atomic Scale : Design, Synthesis and Evaluation of Coatings

    Author : Mattias Lindquist; Sture Hogmark; Urban Wiklund; Ian Hutchings; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Materials science; Tribology; low friction; PVD; sputtering; nanocomposite; Materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : In this thesis a new design concept of tribologically active coatings aimed for low friction applications, have been explored. Materials modeled by ab initio DFT calculations were realized through deposition of carbide and nanocomposite coatings by DC-magnetron sputtering. READ MORE
