  1. 1. Antiadhesive agents targeting uropathogenic Escherichia coli : Multivariate studies of protein-protein and protein-carbohydrate interactions

    Author : Andreas Larsson; Jan Kihlberg; Fredrik Almqvist; Mats Larhed; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Organic chemistry; Antibacterial; pili; antiadhesive agents; structure based design; statistical molecular design; 2-pyridone; amino acid derivative; galabiose; enaminone; SPR; ELISA; QSAR; Organisk kemi; Organic chemistry; Organisk kemi; organisk kemi; Organic Chemistry;

    Abstract : This thesis describes studies directed towards development of novel antiadhesive agents, with particular emphasis on compounds that prevent attachment of bacteria to a host-cell. Three different proteins involved in the assembly or function of adhesive pili in uropathogenic Escherichia coli have been targeted either by rational structure based design or statistical molecular methods. 2. 2. Carbon monoxide and nitric oxide as antimicrobial agents : focus on ESBL-producing uropathogenic E.coli

    Author : Charlotte Sahlberg Bang; Katarina Persson; Bo Söderquist; Annelie Brauner; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; biofilm; carbon monoxide; CORM-2; DETA NO; extendedspectrum beta-lactamases; nitric oxide; urinary tract infection; uropathogenic Escherichia coli; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Urinary tract infections (UTI) are common in humans and most often caused by uropathogenic Escherichia coli (E. coli). Extended-spectrum beta-lactamase (ESBL)-producing E. coli are increasing worldwide and they are frequently multidrug-resistant with limited treatment options. READ MORE

  3. 3. Glycosphingolipid interactions of Helicobacter pylori and F1C-fimbriated Escherichia coli

    Author : Niamh Roche; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : Helicobacter pylori; F1C fimbriae; Escherichia coli; glycosphingolipids; microbial adhesion; mass spectrometry;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to investigate glycosphingolipid interactions of the human pathogens Helicobacter pylori and F1C-fimbriated uropathogenic Escherichia coli. Of particular interest were interactions of H. pylori to complex gangliosides, the role played by H. READ MORE

  4. 4. Uropathogenic Esherichia coli, multidrug-resistance and induction of host defense mechanisms

    Author : Isak Demirel; Katarina Persson; Robert Kruse; Mirjana Poljakovic; Gabriela Godaly; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Urinary tract infection; uropathogenic Escherichia coli; suppressor of cytokine signalling 3; nitric oxide; cytokines; extended-spectrum beta-lactamases; filamentation; IL-6; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) is the primary cause of urinary tract infection (UTI), which is one of the most common infections in humans. UPEC strains have acquired successful strategies to subvert the host defense and antibiotics to persist in the urinary tract. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular analysis of transcription factors in uropathogenic E. coli adhesin operons

    Author : Stina Lindberg; Bernt Eric Uhlin; Åsa Sjöling; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; UPEC; E. coli; F1C; P fimbriae; cross-talk; FocB; PapB; crystal structure; OMVs; Medical microbiology; Medicinsk mikrobiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : The main causative agent of human urinary tract infections is the uropathogenic Escherichia coli (UPEC) pathotype. It may cause disease due to its ability to express a number of bacterial virulence factors. Fimbrial adhesins are particularly important for the initial establishment of infection in the urinary tract. READ MORE
