  1. 1. Malignant melanoma-Risk factors and the CDKN2A mutation in relation to phenotypes and other cancers

    Author : Kari Nielsen; Lund Dermatologi och venereologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; clinically atypical nevus; nevus; CDKN2A; melanoma; risk factors; sunbed; UVR;

    Abstract : Background: Cutaneous malignant melanoma (CMM) is an increasingly common cancer in fair-skinned people. The purpose of this thesis was to study high-risk patients with multiple tumours including a CMM, high-risk families with the unique Swedish germline mutation in CDKN2A(113insArg), as well as study risk factors for CMM in women. 2. 2. Prevention of Experimental Cataract Induced by UVR

    Author : Martin Kronschläger; Per Söderberg; Madeleine Zetterberg; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; cataract; ultraviolet radiation; apoptosis; thioltransferase; caffeine;

    Abstract : Cataract is the leading cause of blindness in the world and is defined by opacification of the normally transparent lens of the eye. The major avoidable cause of cataract is ultraviolet radiation (UVR), but no current strategies have been developed to prevent the onset of cataract. READ MORE

  3. 3. Influence of exposure patterns and oxidation in UVR-induced cataract

    Author : Marcelo Ayala; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cataract; ultraviolet radiation; lens; in vivo; rats; oxidative process; time;

    Abstract : Background: Ultraviolet radiation (UVR) is one among a number of possible factors that may lead to the development of cataract. Whereas induction of cataract as the result of onetime exposure to UVR has been studied extensively, the data on lens damage resulting from repeated exposures to UVR are scarce. READ MORE

  4. 4. Cataract induced by UVR-B 300nm : characterization and genetic modulation of the lens sensitivity to oxidative stress

    Author : Linda Maren Meyer; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Lens; cataract; ultraviolet radiation; oxidative stress; Grx1; interleukins;

    Abstract : Cataract is defined as an opacification of the lens resulting in visual impairment. Worldwide, it is the number one cause of blindness and there are currently no strategies to prevent the onset of the disease. Cataract surgery is the most commonly performed elective intervention in industrialized countries. READ MORE

  5. 5. Ultraviolet radiation and cornea

    Author : Alexander Podskochy; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Cornea; UVR; keratocytes; apoptosis; Fas ligand; hyaluronan; biglycan; rabbit; wound healing.;

    Abstract : Background: Acute exposure of the mammalian eye to UVR results in development of photokeratitis after a period of a few hours. Chronic exposure to UVR is associated with an increased risk of several corneal disorders, including pterygium, climatic droplet keratopathy, and climatic proteoglycan stromal keratopathy. READ MORE
