  1. 6. The vegetation of kettle-holes in central Poland

    Author : Ewa Kaźmierczak; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Våtmarker; Växtsamhällen; Växtgeografi - Östeuropa;

    Abstract : The study aimed at an investigation of the vegetation of kettle-holes in the agricultural landscape of the Ziemia Chelminska region in northern central Poland. Most of these kettle-holes have been influenced strongly by human activities. READ MORE

  2. 7. Wetlands as a means to reduce the environmental impact of mine drainage waters

    Author : Åsa Sjöblom; Bert Allard; Karsten Håkansson; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Lakvatten; våtmarker; vattenrening; miljö; Water in nature and society; Vatten i natur och samhälle;

    Abstract : In many mining regions of the world, pollution of surface water and groundwater by drainage water originating from mines aiming waste poses either a serious threat to the environment, or a severe environmental problem. During the last two and a half decades, treatment of mine drainage water in constructed and natural wetlands has emerged as an alternative to more conventional methods to handle the problem. Abstract : Degradation of water resources has become one of the most pressing global concerns currently facing mankind. Constructed Wetlands (CWs) represent a concept to combat deterioration of water resources by acting as buffers between wastewater and receiving water bodies. READ MORE

  4. 9. Particulate phosphorus accumulation and net retention in constructed wetlands receiving agricultural runoff : Critical analysis of factors affecting retention estimates

    Author : Karin Johannesson; Karin Tonderski; Stefan Weisner; Uno Wennergren; Ben Surridge; Linköpings universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Phosphorus retention; constructed wetlands; agriculture; sampling strategy;

    Abstract : Övergödning är ett allvarligt miljöproblem, som bland annat orsakar omfattande blomningar av alger och blågrönbakterier. I söt- och brackvatten är fosfor ofta det mest begränsande näringsämnet för dessa organismer, varför en minskning av fosfortillförseln är nödvändig för att nå förbättringar. READ MORE

  5. 10. Invading Herbivory. Effects of the Golden Apple Snail (Pomacea canaliculata) in Asian Wetlands

    Author : Nils Carlsson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; gastropoda; invasive species; golden apple snail; herbivory; wetland functioning; biodiversity; sustainable control; indigenous predators; size-dependent competitive ability; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; Hydrobiology; aquatic ecology; marine biology;

    Abstract : The South American golden apple snail (Pomacea canaliculata) was intentionally introduced to aquacultures in South East Asia to produce snails for human consumption, but the aquatic snails soon escaped and started to consume large amounts of rice seedlings. The aim of this thesis was to quantify the effects of this invasive herbivore on aquatic plants in natural wetlands since previous research has focused on effects of the snail in rice fields.
