  1. 1. Atrial fibrillation after cardiac surgery : an analysis of risk factors, mechanisms, and survival effects

    Author : Giovanni Mariscalco; Bengt Åberg; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; atrial fibrillation; adult; cardiac surgery; coronary artery bypass grafting; valvular surgery; cardiopulmonary bypass; mortalilty; histology; catecholamines; embolism; Surgery; Kirurgi;

    Abstract : Background: Despite the recent improvements in surgical techniques and postoperative patient care, atrial fibrillation (AF) remains the most frequent complication after cardiac surgery. Although postoperative AF is often regarded as a benign clinical condition, this arrhythmia has significant adverse effects on patient recovery and postoperative survival. READ MORE

  2. 2. Cardiovascular risk factors in aortic stenosis

    Author : Johan Ljungberg; Stefan Söderberg; Bengt Johansson; Peter Nilsson; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Valvular heart disease; aortic stenosis; bicuspid aortic valve; cardiovascular risk factors; hypertension; diabetes mellitus; smoking; hypercholesterolemia; obesity; shrunken pore; renal failure; Epidemiology; epidemiologi; Cardiology; kardiologi;

    Abstract : Introduction: Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common hemodynamic significant valvular heart disease and affects about 2% of the population. The incidence increases with age. When symptoms of the stenotic aortic valve disease eventually occur the 2-year mortality exceeds 50%. READ MORE

  3. 3. Midgut carcinoid tumours - biochemical and therapeutic aspects

    Author : Gunnel Westberg; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; carcinoid syndrome; valvular heart disease; 5-HT; chromogranins; octreotide; hepatic arterial embolization;

    Abstract : The biology of human midgut carcinoid tumour was studied experimentally in primary cell culture and clinically in patients with the midgut carcinoid syndrome. In cell cultures, tumour cells had a secretory pattern of 5-HTP, 5-HT and 5-HIAA specific for each tumour indicating individual regulation of synthesis/degradation. READ MORE

  4. 4. Clinical Outcomes of Transcatheter Aortic Valve Implantation (TAVI)

    Author : Konrad Nilsson; Stefan James; Christina Christersson; Giovanna Sarno; Henrik Schirmer; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; transcatheter aortic valve implantation; aortic stenosis; clinical outcomes; risk prediction; geographical differences; coronary artery disease; Cardiology; Kardiologi;

    Abstract : Aortic stenosis (AS) is the most common valvular heart disease and most prevalent in the elderly. In the latest decades, a new method for replacement of the aortic valve: transcatheter aortic valve implantation (TAVI) has been introduced. READ MORE

  5. 5. The bicuspid aortic valve : studies on valve morphology and pathology in relation to ascending aortic dilatation and coronary artery disease

    Author : Veronica Jackson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The prevalence of bicuspid aortic valve (BAV) is 1-2% and is thereby the most common cardiac malformation. BAV is highly associated with valvular dysfunction and aortic conditions such as ascending aortic aneurysm and aortic dissection. Of BAV individuals, 25-50% will develop indications for surgical intervention. READ MORE
