  1. 1. Structural Studies of Echinococcus granulosus Fatty-acid-binding Protein 1 and Human Semicarbazide-sensitive Amine Oxidase

    Author : Emma Jakobsson; Gerard Kleywegt; Andrea Mattevi; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Cell and molecular biology; semicarbazide-sensitive amine oxidase; vascular adhesion protein-1; copper-containing amine oxidase; fatty-acid-binding protein; Echinococcus granulosus; crystal structure; Cell- och molekylärbiologi; Cell and molecular biology; Cell- och molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : The parasite Echinococcus granulosus causes hydatid disease, a major zoonosis. A fatty-acid-binding protein, EgFABP1, is important for the parasite, as it must acquire almost all its lipids from its environment or the host. The structure of EgFABP1 has been solved and refined to 1.6 Å resolution. READ MORE

  2. 2. NFAT signaling in chronic and acute inflammation - A novel target for the treatment of diabetic vascular complications and acute pancreatitis?

    Author : Anna Zetterqvist; Diabetiska komplikationer; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; NFAT; vascular; diabetes; inflammation; atherosclerosis; diabetic retinopathy; acute pancreatitis; osteopontin; VCAM-1; A-285222;

    Abstract : Diabetic patients suffer from macro- and microvascular complications causing increased morbidity and mortality. How hyperglycemia provokes vascular damage remains unclear, but glucose is believed to fuel a harmful low-grade chronic inflammation of the vessel wall. READ MORE

  3. 3. Endothelial-leukocyte interactions

    Author : Maria Olofsson; Diabetes - öpatofysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Histology; endothelial cell; leukocyte; apoptosis; mitochondria; heparin binding protein; vascular permeability; E-selectin; migration; rolling; cytochemistry; histochemistry; tissue culture; Histologi; cytokemi; histokemi; vävnadskultur;

    Abstract : This thesis describes early inflammatory responses involving interactions between leukocytes and the endothelial lining of the blood vessel wall. An adhesion molecule, E-selectin, which is upregulated on interleukin-1 activated endothelium, was found to mediate rolling between leukocytes and endothelial cells in vivo. READ MORE

  4. 4. Ready to pull : force transmission during vascular development

    Author : Yuanyuan Zhang; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : The transmission of mechanical forces controls a multitude of cellular processes such as migration, the formation of new organs, muscle contraction, and resistance to the continuous stress that blood flow exerts on the blood vessel wall. These forces are sensed and replayed at the sites of cellular adhesion to the basal membrane as well as cell-cell junctions, where protein complexes connect to the cellular cytoskeleton to relay force into the cell. 5. 5. Identification of the susceptibility genes in type 1 diabetes and diabetic nephropathy

    Author : Jun Ma; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Type 1 Diabetes; Diabetic Nephropathy; Genetic Association; Single Nucleotide Polymorphism;

    Abstract : Genetic susceptibility plays an important role in the pathogenesis of type 1 diabetes (T1D) and diabetic nephropathy (DN). The present study aims to investigate the association between single nucleotide polymorphisms (SNPs) in candidate genes and DN. READ MORE
