  1. 1. Auxiliary Cells for the Vascularization and Function of Endogenous and Transplanted Islets of Langerhans

    Author : Liza Grapensparr; Per-Ola Carlsson; Leif Jansson; Mia Phillipson; Aileen King; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Islets of Langerhans; beta cells; diabetes; transplantation; vascularization; Schwann cells; endothelial progenitor cells; neural crest stem cells; Medicinsk vetenskap; Medical Science;

    Abstract : Type 1 diabetes develops through the progressive destruction of the insulin-producing beta-cells. Regeneration or replacement of beta-cells is therefore needed to restore normal glucose homeostasis. Presently, normoglycemia can be achieved by the transplantation of whole pancreas or isolated islets of Langerhans. READ MORE

  2. 2. Myofibroblasts and the Vascular Endothelium : Impact of Fibrin Degradation Products and miRNA on Vascular Motility and Function

    Author : Peder Fredlund Fuchs; Pär Gerwins; Johan Kreuger; Arne Östman; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Angiogenesis; Vascular biology; Chemotaxis; Endothelial cell; Myofibroblast; Wound healing; miRNA; Heparan sulfate; Medical Science; Medicinsk vetenskap;

    Abstract : Angiogenesis is the formation of new blood vessels from pre-existing vasculature and is important during development as well as wound healing and tissue remodeling. Angiogenesis also occurs during pathological conditions such as diabetic retinopathy and cancer. READ MORE

  3. 3. CYP26B1 as regulator of retinoic acid in vascular cells and atherosclerotic lesions

    Author : Ali Ateia Elmabsout; Allan Sirsjö; Karin Fransén; Helen Håkansson; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; CYP26B1; alternative splice; vascular cells; atherosclerosis; alltrans-retinoic acid; gene polymorphism; inflammation; statins; Medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : Cardiovascular disease (CVD), currently the most common cause of morbidity and mortality worldwide, is caused mainly by atherosclerosis. Atherosclerosis is a chronic multifocal, immunoinflammatory, fibroproliferative disease of medium and large arteries. READ MORE

  4. 4. Functional genomics of vascular endothelial cells

    Author : Elisabet Wallgard; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; Vasculature; endothelial cells; angiogenesis; vascular endothelial growth factor VEGF ; Notch; transcriptome; genomics; microarray; tumor; retina; morpholino knockdown;

    Abstract : Angiogenesis, the formation of new blood vessels from preexisting ones, is a process involved in normal development as well as in several pathological conditions, such as cancer, ischemic heart disease, wound healing and certain retinal complications. Antiangiogenic targeting is therefore a promising new therapeutic principle. READ MORE

  5. 5. Retinoid metabolism and signalling in vascular smooth muscle cells

    Author : Pauline Ocaya; Allan Sirsjö; Andreas C. Gidlöf; William S. Blaner; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : all-trans Retinol; all-trans Retinoic acid; retinoid metabolism; proliferation; Vascular smooth muscle cells; CYP26; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Biomedicin; Biomedicine;

    Abstract : Smooth muscle cells (SMCs) play a major role in cardiovascular diseases. In advanced atherosclerosis, blood flow is impaired due to reduced luminal diameter. Percutaneous vascular interventions, including balloon angioplasty and stent-application are commonly used for the re-establishment of luminal size and improvement of tissue perfusion. READ MORE
