  1. 26. Pre-, peri- and postnatal influences on ophthalmologic outcome - a study on children born after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and children born preterm

    Author : Margareta Hök Wikstrand; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : visual function; intracytoplasmic sperm injection; preterm birth; growth; insulin-like growth factor 1; postnatal development; ocular fundus morphology;

    Abstract : The aims of the present study were to investigate the effects of prenatal factors in children born after intracytoplasmic sperm injection (ICSI) and peri- and postnatal factors in children born preterm on visual function and ocular fundus morphology at school age. In the children born preterm the ophthalmologic outcomes, including optic nerve morphology were analysed in relation to gestational age (GA), birth weight (BW) standard deviation score (SDS), serum levels of insulin-like growth factor I (IGF-I), weight at week 32 (SDS), and weight, length and head circumference (SDS) at school age. 2. 27. Linking quantitative radiology to molecular mechanism for improved vascular disease therapy selection and follow-up

    Author : Andrew J Buckler; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Objective: Therapeutic advancements in atherosclerotic cardiovascular disease have improved the prevention of ischemic stroke and myocardial infarction. However, diagnostic methods for atherosclerotic plaque phenotyping to aid individualized therapy are lacking. READ MORE

  3. 28. Chronic kidney disease of unknown etiology in Central America and Sri Lanka : renal morphology and clinical characteristics

    Author : Julia Wijkström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Chronic kidney disease (CKD) is a global health problem. The most common etiologies of CKD are diabetes mellitus, hypertension, and glomerulonephritis, but over the last several decades a high prevalence of CKD of unknown etiology (CKDu) has been reported from rural communities in some tropical countries, including Central America, and Sri Lanka. 4. 29. Spatio-temporal modeling of morphology and gene-expressions during C.elegans embryogenesis using a new imaging framework

    Author : Johan Henriksson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Many aspects of ontogenesis, the process whereby an organism develops from the fertilized egg to a grown adult, are still poorly understood, despite having been studied since Aristotle's time. The advent of modern biology with the sequencing of entire genomes and mapping of all genes offers the promise that one day we will understand how genes function to regulate cell division and differentiation. 5. 30. Peripheral polyneuropathy in type 2 diabetes mellitus and impaired glucose tolerance. Correlations between morphology, neurophysiology, and clinical findings

    Author : Soley Thrainsdottir; Sektion IV; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; nerve conduction studies; skin biopsy; intraepidermal nerve fibers; Diabetic neuropathy; sural nerve pathology; body mass index; quantitative sensory testing; vibrotactile sense;

    Abstract : Diabetic peripheral polyneuropathy (PN) is a common and serious complication of diabetes. The prevalence of PN is rising with the global burden of type 2 diabetes. The causal mechanisms of PN are not fully understood, but both vascular and metabolic factors play a role. READ MORE
