1. Biomarkers of vascular function and structure in young healthy adults
Abstract : Atherosclerosis is a disease affecting the blood vessels in the body. Its pathophysiologic mechanisms involve infiltration of the vessel walls by fatty matter and immune cells. This process is slow, starting in childhood but typically not manifesting as symptomatic disease until late adulthood (after 60 years of age). READ MORE

2. Vitamin K-dependent protein S - studies of synthesis, structure and function
Abstract : This thesis is based on four projects with the overall aim to investigate vitamin K-dependent protein S functions in relation to its structure. The anticoagulant functions of protein S can be divided in three: 1) cofactor for activated protein C (APC), 2) cofactor for tissue factor pathway inhibitor (TFPI) and 3) APC and TFPI-independent anticoagulant functions. 3. Level Set Segmentation and Volume Visualization of Vascular Trees
Abstract : Medical imaging is an important part of the clinical workflow. With the increasing amount and complexity of image data comes the need for automatic (or semi-automatic) analysis methods which aid the physician in the exploration of the data. READ MORE

4. Mesenchymal stem cells in vascular structure and remodeling in cancer
Abstract : Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) are present in vascular structure and play an important role in vessel remodeling in normal, as well as pathological conditions, such as transplant arteriosclerosis or tumor angiogenesis. Moreover, MSCs affect tumor growth and metastasis by production of chemokines, such as (C-C motif) ligand 7 (CCL7). READ MORE

5. Cardiovascular regulation and vascular structure in prehypertension and coronary heart disease
Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to characterize vascular structure and different aspects of cardiovascular regulation in otherwise healthy subjects with slightly elevated blood pressure and compare to healthy subjects with normotension and also investigate patients with established primary or secondary hypertension and coronary heart disease. Altered cardiac repolarization and arterial baroreflex function has been associated with adverse prognosis and increased risk for ventricular arrhythmias in patients with cardiovascular diseases.
