  1. 1. Uptake and toxicity of brominated flame retardants and pesticides : Studies on littoral organisms and model communities

    Author : Kerstin Gustafsson; Nils Kautsky; Kirsten Christoffersen; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; aquatic ecotoxicology; ecological interactions; indirect effects; model community studies; toxicity; Terrestrial; freshwater and marine ecology; Terrestisk; limnisk och marin ekologi;

    Abstract : In this thesis, brackish and freshwater littoral model communities (microcosms) of varying size and complexity were used to study the effects of brominated flame retardants (BFRs) and pesticides. The brackish water microcosms consisted of natural water, sediment and associated organisms, while the larger freshwater microcosms also contained submersed macrophytes (Elodea canadensis). 2. 2. Experimental Studies of Endocrine Disrupting Compounds in Vascular Cells and Tissues

    Author : Helén Andersson; Eva Brittebo; Malin Celander; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Endocrine disrupting compounds; endothelium; vascular toxicity; Toxicology; Toxikologi;

    Abstract : Epidemiological evidence suggest that exposure to endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs) is a risk factor for diseases that involves the cardiovascular system but we know little about the mechanisms whereby these compounds can cause injury in the vasculature. The aim of this thesis was to characterize the effects and mechanisms of some EDCs in vascular cells and highly vascularized tissues. READ MORE

  3. 3. Toxicity and biological impact of metal and metal oxide nanoparticles : Focus on the vascular toxicity of ultra-small titanium dioxide nanoparticles

    Author : Narges Bayat; Susana Cristobal; Janeck James Scott-Fordsmand; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanoparticles; Nanotoxicology; Ultra-small nanoparticles; Biochemistry; biokemi;

    Abstract : The application of nanoparticles (NPs) in different technologies has led to tremendous advancement in those fields.  Moreover, there is growing interest in application of ultra-small NPs (USNPs) at 1-3 nm due to their distinct molecule like features. Parallel to these promises, there is a growing concern regarding their safety. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vascular actions of antimicrobial peptides

    Author : Cristina Ciornei; Sektion II; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Cardiovascular system; vascular smooth muscle; sepsis; nitric oxide; human antimicrobial peptide LL-37; Antimicrobial peptides; lipopolysaccharide; bactericidal permeability-increasing protein;

    Abstract : The present thesis focuses on the vascular effects of antimicrobial peptides especially mechanisms involving the vasodilator nitric oxide (NO), which is released from the blood vessel wall during inflammatory conditions such as sepsis. Bacterial lipopolysaccharide stimulates the expression of nitric oxide synthase (iNOS), which increases the NO production in vascular tissues or cultured vascular smooth muscle cells (VSMC). 5. 5. Effect of Drugs on Rabbit Retina

    Author : Anna Cardiakidis Myers; Lund Oftalmologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Drug toxicity; electroretinography; histopathology; intravitreal injection; rifabutin; anti-VEGF; triamcinolone; benzyl alcohol; anti-TNF-alpha; adalimumab;

    Abstract : The adverse effects of drugs in the eye are not easily detected, and the underlying pathogenesis not fully understood. The effects of four different kinds of drugs have been investigated in the rabbit eye, using electroretinography, ocular examination and histochemical methods. READ MORE
