  1. 6. Hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and nitric oxide

    Author : Kristina Hambraeus Jonzon; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : hypoxia; pulmonary vasoconstriction; regional pulmonary bloodflow; stimulus-response; nitric oxide; blood-borne distant effects; nitric oxide synthase activity; inhaled; exhaled; non-enzymatic;

    Abstract : Hypoxia causes pulmonary vasoconstriction (HPV), improving oxygenation by redistribution of the pulmonary blood flow to better oxygenated lung regions. HPV is intrinsic to the pulmonary vascular smooth muscle cell, but can be modulated by several vasoactive substances, as for example endothelium derived nitric oxide (NO) and endothelin-1 (ET-1). 2. 7. Laser Doppler Perfusion Monitoring and Imaging especially as regards testing for sympathetic nerve function

    Author : Carolin Freccero; Kirurgi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Physiology; wavelength; sympathetic vasodilatation; sympathetic vasoconstriction; sympathetic nerve function; parasympathetic nerve function; laser Doppler perfusion imaging; laser Doppler perfusion monitoring; finger skin blood flow; fibre separation; contralateral cooling; Concentration; Fysiologi; Cardiovascular system; Kardiovaskulära systemet; Diagnostik; Diagnostics;

    Abstract : The operating principle of all laser Doppler methods is based on the fact that incident photons shift in wavelength when interacting with moving blood cells passing through the microvascular network. After photodetection and further signal processing, the recorded parameter can be considered an arbitrary measure of tissue blood flow, and this is referred to as ?perfusion?. READ MORE

  3. 8. Endothelin in the pulmonary circulation with special reference to hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction

    Author : Peter Holm; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : bosentan; BMS-182874; ; BQ-123; BQ-788; endothelin; endothelium; hypoxia; hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction; pulmonary hypertension; receptor antagonism; TBC 11251.;

    Abstract : A number of substances originating from the pulmonary endothelium have recently been found to be involved in the regulation of pulmonary vascular tone. Accumulating evidence suggests that endothelial dysfunction contributes to pulmonary hypertension, an important clinical problem often associated with hypoxemia. READ MORE

  4. 9. Modulators of hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction and pulmonary hypertension. Implications for new treatment strategies

    Author : DAVID KYLHAMMAR; Kardiologi; []

  5. 10. Benefits of Spontaneous Breathing : Compared with Mechanical Ventilation

    Author : László Vimláti; Michael Lichtwarck-Aschoff; Anders Larsson; Lars Wiklund; Carl-Johan Wickerts; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; spontaneous breathing; mechanical ventilation; pulmonary shunt; oxygenation; hypoxic pulmonary vasoconstriction; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; Anaesthesiology and Intensive Care;

    Abstract : When spontaneous breathing (SB) is allowed during mechanical ventilation (MV), atelectatic lung areas are recruited and oxygenation improves thereby. Whether unsupported SB at its natural pattern (without PEEP and at low pressure/small tidal volume) equally recruits and improves oxygenation, and if so by which mechanism, has not been studied.
