11. Metaphor as a mode of interpretation : An essay on interactional and contextual sense-making processes, metaphorology, and verbal arts
Abstract : This essay is an attempt to assess the oddity and importance of metaphor, both viewed as inseparable, internal aspects of the metaphorical sense-making activity. To outline the "challenge" of metaphor, arguments are made against the traditional approaches to metaphor, namely the idea that metaphor is a thing, an entity out there in the discourse or text, whose meaning is embedded within its discrete units and parts. This report consists of two studies: the first study (paper I) gives descriptions of the interaction between infants and their parents during the first hour post partum and the second study (papers II-IV) in this report examines the effect of extra contact during the first hour following delivery. Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis is to illuminate the impact of singing and music on persons with dementia and their caregivers, and to describe a concept based on caregiver singing. The aim of Study I was to illuminate the importance of music events and the reactions and social interactions of patients with dementia or suspected dementia and their caregivers before, during and after such events, including the reminder of the day. Abstract : This thesis provides a synchronic description of verbal negation in over fifteen Semitic languages and a historical assessment of these expressions. The objectives are to describe the expression of standard negation in these languages, to compare these negative clauses with their affirmative counterparts as well as expressions of non-standard negation, and to relate historically the negative expressions of different languages.
