  1. 1. Assessment of 3D movements in the lumbar and cervical spine with a new CT based method

    Author : Per Svedmark; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Background: Numerous methods for measuring segmental motion in spine have been described. However, because of the inaccessibility of the spine and the complexity of segmental movements, most of the noninvasive methods in use today have low accuracy or are unable to detect movements in all three cardinal axes. 2. 2. Quantification of skeletal, muscular and kinematics parameters in scoliosis : methodological and clinical studies

    Author : Khaled Mohamed Diab; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Idiopathic scoliosis; new methods; scoliotic angle; vertebral body volume; intercostal muscle; ultrasonography; ground reaction force; centre of mass; centre of pressure; motor control;

    Abstract : This dissertation presents new methods derived for precise evaluation of a number of anatomical and functional variables of the complex thoracospinal deformity in scoliosis. By consensus the scoliotic angle at the frontal plane is measured on radiographs using the Cobb method. READ MORE

  3. 3. Spinal cord repair strategies

    Author : Henrich Cheng; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Spinal cord; injury; paraplegia; repair; regeneration; nerve graft; fibrin glue; aFGF; GDNF; gait; axonal tracing Henrich Cheng; 1996;

    Abstract : Regeneration of long fiber tracts does not occur spontaneously in the adult mammalian brain or spinal cord. The present work is an attempt to develop a repair strategy that may overcome this lack of recovery and apply it to spinal cord injury. READ MORE

  4. 4. On the role of transversus abdominis in trunk motor control

    Author : Martin Eriksson Crommert; Peter Engfeldt; Alf Thorstensson; Maria Ekblom; Birgitta Öberg; Örebro universitet; []
    Keywords : transversus abdominis; trunk muscles; EMG; intramuscular; IAP; motor control; postural control; spine stability; postural demand; MEDICINE; MEDICIN; Medicin; Medicine;

    Abstract : All trunk muscles are important contributors to spine stability. However, the deepest abdominal muscle, transversus abdominis (TrA), with its characteristically horizontal fibre orientation seems to serve a unique function in trunk motor control. READ MORE

  5. 5. Aspects on the influence of the thoracic wall on the pathogenesis of idiopathic scoliosis

    Author : Bo Sevastik; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Experimental and clinical studies were performed in order to study the possible influence of the thoracic wall on the pathomechanism of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis, IS. Experimental longitudinal elongation of one rib resulted in a deviation of the vertebra in the frontal plane to the contralateral side of the elongated rib, an anterior displacement in the sagittal plane and a rotation towards the convexity of the curve, thus a deviation identical to the 3-D configuration of the spine seen in IS.
