  1. 1. Biomimetic Membranes: : Molecular Structure and Stability Studies by Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy

    Author : Jonathan F.D. Liljeblad; Mark W. Rutland; Magnus C. Johnson; Tore Brinck; Lars Kloo; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy VSFS ; Langmuir monolayer; LB depositon; phospholipids; oxidation; biomimetic membranes; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In the research presented in this licentiate thesis the surface specific technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy, VSFS, combined with the Langmuir trough has been utilized to investigate Langmuir monolayers and Langmuir-Blodgett (LB) deposited mono- and bilayers of phospholipids. Their molecular structure, stability, and hydration were probed to gain additional understanding of important properties aiming at facilitating the use of such layers as model systems for biological membranes. 2. 2. Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy Studies at the Air-Liquid Interface

    Author : Eric Tyrode; Mark Rutland; Paul Davies; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Sum Frequency Generation; SFG; VSFS; surfactant; adsorption; water; surface structure; hydration; surface tension; fluorosurfactants; liquid-air interface; poly ethylene oxide surfactants; surface molecular orientation; acetic acid.; Surface and colloid chemistry; Yt- och kolloidkemi;

    Abstract : In this thesis the structure and hydration of small organic and amphipilic compounds adsorbed at the air-liquid interface, have been studied using the nonlinear optical technique Vibrational Sum Frequency Spectroscopy (VSFS). The second order nature of the sum frequency process makes this technique particularly surface sensitive and very suitable for interfacial studies, as molecules at the surface can be distinguished even in the presence of a vast excess of the same molecules in the bulk. 3. 3. Molecular Insight into Ion-Specific Interactions : Vibrational Sum Frequency Study of the Carboxylic Acid Moiety

    Author : Adrien Sthoer; Eric Tyrode; Paul Cremer; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; specific ion effects; carboxylic acid; fatty acid Langmuir monolayer; vibrational sum frequency spectroscopy; VSFS; Electrical double layer;

    Abstract : Ion specific effects at charged interfaces find numerous applications in colloidal sciences and play a vital role in many biological processes. Despite having been studied for over a century, starting with the work of F. Hofmeister in the 1880s, a comprehensive molecular  understanding remains elusive. READ MORE

  4. 4. Vibrational Sum Frequency and Infrared Reflection/Absorption Spectroscopy Studies of the Air/Liquid and Liquid/Metal Interfaces

    Author : Magnus Johnson; Christofer Leygraf; Andrew Gewirth; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Corrosion science; laser spectroscopy; nonlinear optics; Materials science; Teknisk materialvetenskap;

    Abstract : Atmospheric corrosion, the most common form of metal corrosion, occurs within the interfacial region between a solid, and the surrounding atmosphere. In fact three phases and two interfaces are involved: the gas, a thin liquid layer, a solid, the gas/liquid and the liquid/solid interfaces. READ MORE

  5. 5. Molecular studies of initial atmospheric corrosion of copper : Exploration of ultra-sensitive techniques for the inhibiting effect of self assembled monolayers, and the effect of gamma radiation

    Author : Saman Hosseinpour; Christofer Leygraf; Franz Geiger; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Corrosion; copper; self assembled monolayer; sum frequency spectroscopy; qcm; gamma radiation;

    Abstract : Atmospheric corrosion indoors is of great practical importance for the degradation of metals, for example in electronics, military equipment, and cultural heritage items. It involves a wide range of chemical, electrochemical, and physical processes occurring in gas, liquid, and solid phases, and at the interfaces between them. READ MORE
