  1. 1. The Threat to the Baltic Salmon - a Combination of Persistent Pollutants, Parasite and Oxidative Stress

    Author : Maria Persson; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Salmo salar; Atlantic salmon; polychlorinated biphenyls; Animal ecology; akvatisk ekologi; limnologi; Marinbiologi; limnology; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; Ekologi; Ecology; lake Vänern; lake Vättern; Baltic Sea; Eubothrium crassum; aryl hydrocarbon receptor; AHR; consumption advice; stable isotopes; astaxanthin; EROD; M74; antioxidants; biomagnification; cestodes; parasites; DDT; Djurekologi; Environmental chemistry; Miljökemi; PCB;

    Abstract : Atlantic salmon (Salmo salar) from the Baltic Sea suffer from a reproduction disease known as the M74-syndrome. Newly hatched fry develop nerve disorders and die between 3-5 days after the first symptoms are seen. This is a maternally transmitted disease that is casued by a thiamine (vitamin B1) deficiency. 2. 2. Significance and Diversity of Lake Bacteriophages

    Author : David Lymer; Eva Lindström; Lars Tranvik; Ruth-Anne Sandaa; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; viral ecology; lake; bacteriophage; diversity; phosphorus; Freshwater ecology; Limnisk ekologi;

    Abstract : Viruses has a relatively recently been discovered in high abundances in aquatic systems. Their possible importance has therefore been largely overlooked. READ MORE

  3. 3. Viral Loop Dynamics in Temperate and Polar Freshwaters

    Author : Christin Säwström; Biologiska institutionen; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; akvatisk ekologi; aquatic ecology; marine biology; Hydrobiology; temperate; polar; freshwaters; nutrient limitation; bacterial mortality; lysogeny; dissolved organic carbon; humic; Arctic; Antarctic; Bacteria; Virus; limnology; Marinbiologi; limnologi;

    Abstract : All cellular organisms in aquatic environments are susceptible to virus attack. Viruses are the smallest but most abundant biological entities in freshwaters. This thesis describes interactions between viruses and bacteria in temperate and polar freshwaters with particular emphasis on Arctic and Antarctic aquatic systems. READ MORE

  4. 4. Diversity of aquatic viruses from genes to host interactions

    Author : Emelie Nilsson; Karin Holmfeldt; Martha Clokie; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; microbial ecology; bacteriophage; ‘omics; isolation; host range; temporal variation; deep biosphere; Baltic Sea; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Viruses are the most numerous entities on Earth, and can be found in all waters. In aquatic ecosystems, viruses are key players since they alter the way energy and nutrients are transferred by killing larger organisms. READ MORE

  5. 5. Picophytoplankton seasonal dynamics in the Baltic Sea

    Author : Javier Alegria Zufía; Hanna Farnelid; Catherine Legrand; Nathan Ahlgren; Linnéuniversitetet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; picophytoplankton; Synechococcus; picoeukaryote; phycoerythrin; phycocyanin; ammonium; nitrate; 16S rDNA; flow cytometry; grazing; viral lysis; seasonality; Akvatisk ekologi; Aquatic Ecology;

    Abstract : Picophytoplankton (15°C there was a preference for ammonium over nitrate. Clade A/B dominated the SYN community, except during summer at the coastal station when low nitrate and warm temperatures promoted S5.2 dominance. Grazing was observed to control SYN and PPE abundances and had an effect on the SYN community structure. READ MORE
