11. Biosensor Studies of Ligand Interactions with Structurally Flexible Enzymes : Applications for Antiviral Drug Development
Abstract : The use of a surface plasmon biosensor fills a missing link in kinetic studies of enzymes, since it measures directly the interaction between biomolecules and allows determination of parameters that are determined only indirectly in activity assays. The present thesis deals with kinetic and dynamic aspects of ligand binding to two viral enzymes: the human cytomegalovirus (HCMV) protease and the human immunodeficiency virus type 1 reverse transcriptase (HIV-1 RT). 12. Cyclic sulfamides as HIV-1 protease inhibitors : Synthesis, X-ray structure analysis and structure-activity relationship
Abstract : Human Immunodeficiency Virus (HIV) is the causative agent of Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome (AIDS). Inhibition of HIV-1 protease leads to immature and non-infectious viral particles. The synthesis of a number of cyclic HIV-1 protease inhibitors and the subsequent evaluation in an enzyme assay is presented in this thesis. READ MORE

13. Identification and functional characterization of Epstein-Barr virus-encoded deconjugases
Abstract : The post-translational conjugation or deconjugation of proteins by ubiquitin (Ub) or ubiquitin-like molecules (UbLs: e.g. SUMO, NEDD8, ISG15) has emerged as a major regulatory mechanism of various cellular activities. READ MORE

14. Studies of Retroviral Reverse Transcriptase and Flaviviral Protease Enzymes as Antiviral Drug Targets : Applications in Antiviral Drug Discovery & Therapy
Abstract : Viruses are a major threat to humans due to their unique adaptability, evolvability and capability to control their hosts as parasites and genetic elements. HIV/AIDS is the third largest cause of death by infectious diseases in the world, and drug resistance due to the viral mutations is still the leading cause of treatment failure. READ MORE

15. Identification of protease inhibitors against Flaviviruses and Coronaviruses
Abstract : Vector-borne flaviviruses and coronaviruses of zoonotic origins are important human pathogens and represent a serious threat to public health worldwide. Flaviviruses can be found on all continents, apart from Antarctica, where they are transmitted by arthropod vectors causing millions of infections every year. READ MORE
