  1. 11. Viral parameters influencing clinical long-term non progression in HIV-1 infected subjects

    Author : Ubaldo Visco Comandini; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : LTNP; HIV-1 DNA; HIV-1 RNA; quantification; spontaneous decrease; genetic heterogeneity; nef; LTR; CCR5 deletion;

    Abstract : A very small portion of the HIV-1 infected population is constituted by individuals, called long- term non progressors (LTNP), in whom after even a decade or more, no visible deterioration of the immune system is recognized and the infection remains therefore asymptomatic. The reasons for such "natural" prolonged well-being can be attributed to both the virus and the infected host and their understanding is likely to give important information for the development of an effective HIV- vaccine and for immune reconstitution therapy. 2. 12. Molecular Diagnosis of Common Viral Infectious Diseases Based on Real-Time PCR

    Author : Nahla Mohamed; Jonas Blomberg; Jan Fohlman; Elgh Fredrik; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : Molecular biology; Microbiology; Virology; rTth DNA polymerase; UNG; QPCR; RNA virus; broadly targeted PCR; Molekylärbiologi;

    Abstract : Molecular biology has become an integral part of the diagnosis of infectious diseases. Recently, quantitative real-time PCR (QPCR) methods (often in the form of so-called TaqMan® systems) have been developed for the diagnosis of a wide range of infectious diseases; these techniques found valuable clinical application in the diagnosis and evaluation of progress and therapeutic success of viral diseases. 3. 13. Hepatitis B virus RNA in serum and liver tissue - quantification using digital PCR

    Author : Kasthuri Prakash; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; hepatitis B virus; NTCP; HBV DNA; HBV RNA; subviral particles; integrations; droplet digital PCR;

    Abstract : Hepatitis B virus (HBV) infection is a global health issue that is responsible for approximately 900,000 deaths each year, by inducing liver cirrhosis and hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). A few markers are used to classify HBV infection and monitor treatment efficacy, including HBV DNA, surface antigen (HBsAg) and e antigen (HBeAg) in serum as well as HBV DNA and RNA in liver tissue. 4. 14. Dynamics of drug-resistant minor viral populations and phenotypic drug susceptibility in diverse HIV-1 subtypes

    Author : Shambhu Prasad Ganeshappa Aralaguppe; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : ;

    Abstract : Antiretroviral therapy (ART) has significantly reduced mortality in human immunodeficiency virus type 1 (HIV-1) infection, both in high- and low/middle-income countries (LMIC). However, the development of drug resistance following exposure to subtherapeutic concentrations of antiretrovirals (ARV) and transmitted drug resistance mutations (DRM) adversely affects the outcome of ART. 5. 15. Studies on the presence and influence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in head and neck tumors

    Author : Liselotte Dahlgren; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Head and neck cancer; tonsillar cancer; tongue cancer; human papillomavirus; viral load; survival; comparative genomic hybridization; respiratory papillomatosis; Interferon-alpha;

    Abstract : The aim of this thesis was to confirm the presence of human papillomavirus (HPV) in tonsillar cancer and the previous finding that presence of HPV in tonsillar cancer is prognostic favorable for patient survival. Furthermore, the physical state and viral load of HPV in tonsillar cancer, and the influence of HPV on chromosomal patterns and on the clinical outcome for tonsillar cancer patients were examined.
