16. Antiretroviral treatment of HIV-1 in the central nervous system
Abstract : HIV-1 invades the central nervous system (CNS) early in the infectious course. It establishes a chronic progressive infection, and triggers an intrathecal immune response. If left untreated, a majority of patients will develop neurological complications, caused by opportunistic pathogens or HIV-1 itself. READ MORE

17. Hepatitis B virus replication and integration
Abstract : Chronic infection with hepatitis B virus (HBV) affects 240 million people worldwide and may cause liver disease including hepatocellular carcinoma (HCC). Initially patients have high levels of HBV DNA in their blood, no liver disease and express the e antigen (HBeAg). READ MORE

18. HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections in Guinea-Bissau, West Africa : studies of immune responses, prevailing viruses and epidemiological trends
Abstract : This thesis encompasses immunological, virological and epidemiological studies of HIV-1 and HIV-2 infections in Guinea-Bissau. We have established a robust and reliable diagnostic strategy based on a combination of enzyme-linked immunosorbent assays (ELISAs) and rapid simple tests. READ MORE

19. Molecular diagnostics of infectious diseases
Abstract : In DNA-based diagnostics, the polymerase chain reaction(PCR) is the most widely used DNA amplification method. Toenable both sensitive and specific detection of agents causinginfectious diseases, the PCR needs to becombined with methodsto prepare the clinical sample containing the genetic materialof the pathogen. 20. Nucleic acid-based detection and characterization of hepatitis C virus
Abstract : Nucleic acid-based methods were developed to detect and characterize the HCV genome in immunocompetent and immunodeficient patents of whom some were IFN-a treated. HCV RNA was found in most sera (95%), livers (97%) and PBMC (100%) of patients with confirmed chronic hepatitis, but also in sera (21%) of patients with indeterminate confirmatory antibody test, especially those with c22 antigen reactivity.
