  1. 1. Biology of a small RNA virus that infects Drosophila melanogaster

    Author : Sajna Anand Sadanandan; Dan Hultmark; Francis Jiggins; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Nora virus; Drosophila melanogaster; virus biology; host-pathogen interaction; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Drosophila melanogaster has been extensively used as a model organism to study diverse facets of biology, including host-pathogen interactions and the basic biology of its pathogens. I have used the fruit fly as a model to study elementary aspects of Nora virus biology, such as the role of the different proteins encoded by the virus genome. READ MORE

  2. 2. Targeting Infectious Disease : Structural and functional studies of proteins from two RNA viruses and Mycobacterium tuberculosis

    Author : Anna M. Jansson; T. Alwyn Jones; Sherry L. Mowbray; E. Yvonne Jones; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; RNA virus; coronavirus; alphacoronavirus; nsp1; TGEV; flavivirus; Modoc virus; NS5; methyltransferase; mRNA capping; Mycobacterium tuberculosis; tuberculosis; 1-deoxy-D-xylulose 5-phosphate reductoisomerase; DXR; fosmidomycin analogues; MEP pathway; drug development; xray-crystallography; Biology with specialization in Structural Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot strukturbiologi; Biology with specialization in Molecular Biology; Biologi med inriktning mot molekylärbiologi; Biokemi; Biochemistry; Medicinal Chemistry; Läkemedelskemi;

    Abstract : The recent emergence of a number of new viral diseases as well as the re-emergence of tuberculosis (TB), indicate an urgent need for new drugs against viral and bacterial infections.Coronavirus nsp1 has been shown to induce suppression of host gene expression and interfere with host immune response. 3. 3. Exploring the Molecular Dynamics of Proteins and Viruses

    Author : Daniel Larsson; David van der Spoel; Modesto Orozco; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; molecular dynamics; virus dynamics; capsid dissolution; satellite tobacco necrosis virus; satellite tobacco mosaic virus; virus genome structure; gas phase protein structure; water layer; micelle embedded protein; membrane protein; Chemistry with specialization in Biophysics; Kemi med inriktning mot biofysik;

    Abstract : Knowledge about structure and dynamics of the important biological macromolecules — proteins, nucleic acids, lipids and sugars — helps to understand their function. Atomic-resolution structures of macromolecules are routinely captured with X-ray crystallography and other techniques. READ MORE

  4. 4. Bird-parasite interactions : Using Sindbis virus as a model system

    Author : Karin M. Lindström; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; Carduelis chloris; Sindbis virus; host-parasite interaction; ornament; social dominance; testosterone; sexual selection; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; populationsbiologi; Population Biology;

    Abstract : This thesis focuses on the evolutionary interactions between birds and a parasite, the mosquito-borne Sindbis virus (Togaviridae, Alphavirus). In conclusion, the results show that the Sindbis virus is widespread among birds, and that the fitness of infected hosts may be reduced by the virus. READ MORE

  5. 5. Structure of small RNA phages

    Author : Kaspars Tars; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Developmental biology; bacteriophage; MS2; virus assembly; structural evolution; Utvecklingsbiologi; Developmental biology; Utvecklingsbiologi; molekylärbiologi; Molecular Biology;

    Abstract : Small RNA phages belonging to the family Leviviridae are among the simplest known viruses. They have been used extensively as models for studies of various problems in molecular biology, including protein-RNA interactions, repression of translation, virus assembly and virus evolution.
