  1. 1. Virus Fate and Transport in Groundwater : Organic matter, uncertainty, and cold climate

    Author : Jean-Marc Mayotte; Keven Bishop; Stephan Köhler; Fritjof Fagerlund; Sven Halldin; Constantinos V. Chrysikopoulos; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; managed aquifer recharge; organic matter; virus; numerical modeling; uncertainty; Hydrology; Hydrologi; Mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Water managers must balance the need for clean and safe drinking water with ever-increasing amounts of waste-water. A technique for treating and storing surface water called “managed aquifer recharge” (MAR) is frequently used to help maintain this balance. READ MORE

  2. 2. Hepatitis C virus kinetics during antiviral treatment

    Author : Tony Carlsson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Hepatitis C virus RNA; genotype; kinetics; interferon-alpha; ribavirin.;

    Abstract : It is estimated that 170 million individuals have chronic hepatitis C virus (HCV) infection, whereof 20-30% will develop end stage liver disease within 20-30 years. Antiviral therapy can stop this deterioration and clear the infection in 40-80% of the patients depending on treatment and HCV genotype. READ MORE

  3. 3. Virus-cell membrane interactions - Binding studies of Herpes Simplex Virus using surface-sensitive techniques

    Author : Nadia Peerboom; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TIRF microscopy; single particle tracking; binding kinetics; glycosaminoglycans; herpes simplex virus;

    Abstract : Viruses are parasites capable of infecting all forms of life. They lack the ability to replicate by themselves and therefore hijack the replication machinery of cells to produce new viral copies, called virions. READ MORE

  4. 4. Kinetic studies of NS3 and NS5B from Hepatitis C virus : Implications and applications for drug discovery

    Author : Göran Dahl; Helena Danielson; Raffaele De Francesco; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Hepatitis C virus; NS3; NS5B; enzyme kinetics; inhibition; resistance; drug; Biochemistry; Biokemi; Biokemi; Biochemistry;

    Abstract : The aim of these studies was to increase our understanding of the non-structural proteins 3 and 5B (NS3 and NS5B) from the hepatitis C virus (HCV), and thereby contribute to the development of new and better drugs against HCV.By studying NS3 with substitutions identified to be associated with resistance to NS3 inhibitors in clinical trials (R155Q, A156T and D168V) it was found that not all inhibitors were affected, indicating that cross-resistance can be avoided. 5. 5. Probing and elucidating the dynamics of virus-membrane interaction via plasma membrane mimics

    Author : Konrad Thorsteinsson; Marta Bally; Hudson Pace; Gisa Gerold; Susan Daniel; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Plasma membrane; supported lipid bilayer; binding kinetics; equilibrium fluctuation analysis; TIRF; FRET; norovirus; HSV; SARS-CoV-2; histo-blood group antigens; ApoE; heparan sulfate; mikrobiologi; Microbiology;

    Abstract : Virus infection is initiated by the attachment of a virion to a susceptible cell’s plasma membrane, in a highly dynamic and well-orchestrated process that encompasses various steps and engages numerous viral and cellular factors. These dynamic steps may include initial non-specific binding to ubiquitous cell-membrane ligands, diffusion across the membrane to a suitable entry site and virus engagement with various receptors and co-receptors on the cell surface.
