  1. 1. Experimental studies of large particles in Newtonian and non-Newtonian fluids

    Author : Sagar Zade; Luca Brandt; Fredrik Lundell; Ellen Longmire; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; turbulence; finite-size; particle-laden flows; duct flow; pipe flow; viscoelastic fluid; viscoplastic fluid; Engineering Mechanics; Teknisk mekanik;

    Abstract : In everyday human life, laminar flow is arguably an exception whereas turbulent flow is the norm. Yet, the former has been much better understood, naturally since laminar flow renders itself to treatment in a relatively easier fashion compared to turbulence with its chaotic dynamics across multiple scales in space and time. 2. 2. A Lagrangian-Eulerian simulation framework for viscoelastic fluid flows

    Author : Simon Ingelsten; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Computational Fluid Dynamics; non-Newtonian flow; Immersed boundary methods;

    Abstract : Viscoelastic fluids appear in various industrial applications, including adhesive application, additive manufacturing, seam sealing and parts assembly with adhesive. These processes are characterized by complex geometry, moving objects and transient multiphase flow, making them inherently difficult to simulate numerically. READ MORE

  3. 3. Simulation of individual cells in flow

    Author : Lailai Zhu; Luca Brandt; Michael Graham; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Hydrodynamic interaction; swimming microorganisms; capsule; Stokes flow; finite element method; boundary integral method; general geometry Ewald method; spectral element method; viscoelastic fluid; cellular deformation; flow cytometry; cell sorting; microrheology; Teknisk mekanik; Engineering Mechanics;

    Abstract : In this thesis, simulations are performed to study the motion ofindividual cells in flow, focusing on the hydrodynamics of actively swimming cells likethe self-propelling microorganisms, and of passively advected objects like the red bloodcells. In particular, we develop numerical tools to address the locomotion ofmicroswimmers in viscoelastic fluids and complex geometries, as well as the motion ofdeformable capsules in micro-fluidic flows. 5. 5. A Lagrangian-Eulerian simulation method for viscoelastic flows applied to adhesive joining

    Author : Simon Ingelsten; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; volume of fluid; computational fluid dynamics; immersed boundary methods; viscoelastic flow; adhesive joining;

    Abstract : Viscoelastic flows are important for many industrial processes, such as adhesive joining, polymer extrusion and additive manufacturing. Numerical simulations enable virtual evaluation and product realization, which can support the design phase and reduce the amount of costly physical testing. However, such applications are challenging to simulate. READ MORE
