  1. 21. Oviposition cues as a tool for developing a new malaria control strategy

    Author : Lynda Eneh; Anna-Karin Borg-Karlson; Willem Takken; KTH; []
    Keywords : Anopheles gambiae; Malaria; Oviposition; Volatile compounds; GC-MS; DGGE; Sorption; Fungi; Bacteria; Physicochemical parameters; Nut grass; Bermuda grass; Anopheles gambiae; Malaria; Äggläggning; Flyktiga ämnen; GC-MS; DGGE; Sorptionen; Svampar; Bakterier; Gräs; Kemi; Chemistry;

    Abstract : Anopheles gambiae sensu lato mosquitoes are among the dominant malaria vectors in sub-Saharan Africa. However, not much is known about the oviposition behaviour of these species necessary for the development of malaria vector control strategies. READ MORE

  2. 22. Aroma characterisation and retention after heat treatment and drying of fruits using extraction and GC-MS analysis

    Author : Rui Ráice; Livsmedelsteknik; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Fruits; Vangueria infausta; Mangifera indica; volatile; aroma; blanching; drying; encapsulation; modelling; GC-MS.;

    Abstract : This study concerns the identification and characterisation of volatile components of fruits, and evaluation of the effect of heat treatment and drying on retention or loss of volatiles of fruits. The investigation included developing a procedure to extract volatile components from the fruit matrix, a purification step, separation, identification and quantification. READ MORE

  3. 23. Gall midge olfaction and its role in speciation

    Author : Tina Boddum; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : With the swede midge (Contarinia nasturtii) as our main model species, we study two types of olfactory cues that are of importance for gall midges: 1) the pheromones emitted by the female to attract the male; 2) and the host plant volatiles that the females use when finding a host for oviposition. We found that both the blend of compounds and the enantioisomeric form are important for male attraction in the wind tunnel and in the field. READ MORE

  4. 24. Improved methods for enrichment of organic ultra trace components for analysis by gas chromatography

    Author : Adam Kloskowski; KTH; []
    Keywords : water analysis; gas analysis; environmental analysis; sorbent trapping; organic traces; SPME; OTT;

    Abstract : This thesis describes some new methods for analysis oforganic trace components from air and water by gaschromatography. The work is particularly focused on thedevelopment of new technologies for analyte enrichment, usingsorbent-based concepts. Short lengths of open tubular columnswere examined for their potential use as denuders. READ MORE

  5. 25. Ethological control of the Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Wied.)

    Author : Ilich Figueroa; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; Sveriges lantbruksuniversitet; []
    Keywords : LANTBRUKSVETENSKAPER; AGRICULTURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES;

    Abstract : The Mediterranean fruit fly Ceratitis capitata (Diptera: Tephritidae) is a serious threat for the Bolivian fruit sector. Despite its importance, few efforts have focussed on the development of alternative techniques to broad spectrum pesticides, especially those that suppress the pest using odour-mediated behavior manipulation.
