  1. 1. Dispersion modelling of volcanic emissions

    Author : Adam Dingwell; Rutgersson Anna; David Simpson; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; dispersion modelling; atmospheric; volcano; gas emissions; volcanic ash; FLEXPART; FLEXPART-WRF; Spridningsmodellering; atmosfär; vulkan; gasutsläpp; vulkanaska; FLEXPART; FLEXPART-WRF; Meteorology; Meteorologi;

    Abstract : Gases and particles released by volcanoes pose a serious hazard to humans and society. Emissions can be transported over long distances before being reduced to harmless concentrations. Knowing which areas are, or will be, exposed to volcanic emissions is an important part inreducing the impact on human health and society. READ MORE

  2. 2. Health effects of air pollution in Iceland : respiratory health in volcanic environments

    Author : Hanne Krage Carlsen; Anna Oudin; Thorarinn Gislason; Kadri Meister; Bertil Forsberg; Gunilla Wieslander; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Respiratory health; air pollution; volcanic ash; epidemiology; hydrogen sulfide.; Epidemiology; epidemiologi; folkhälsa; Public health;

    Abstract : Air pollution has adverse effects on human health. The respiratory system is the most exposed and short-term changes in air pollution levels have been associated with worsening of asthma symptoms and increased rates of heart attacks and stroke. Air pollution in cities due to traffic is the major concern, as many people are exposed. READ MORE

  3. 3. Characterising volcanic magma plumbing systems : A tool to improve eruption forecasting at hazardous volcanoes

    Author : David A. Budd; Valentin Troll; Tod Waight; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magma plumbing; oxygen isotopes; thermobarometry; crustal assimilation; Katla; Merapi; Kelud; Toba; volcanic hazards; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : This thesis attempts to develop our understanding of volcanic magma plumbing systems and the magmatic processes that operate within them, such as fractional crystallisation, crustal partial melting, assimilation, and magma mixing. I utilise petrology, rock and mineral geochemistry, and isotope systematics to seek to improve our ability to forecast the eruptive frequency and style of active volcanoes, an aspect often lacking in current volcano monitoring efforts. 4. 4. Viscous-brittle deformation of shallowly emplaced silicic magma : Implications for outgassing and volcanic hazards

    Author : Taylor Witcher; Steffi Burchardt; Edward Llewellin; Uppsala universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; magma deformation; magmatic outgassing; magmatic intrusions; rhyolite; Sandfell laccolith; crystal mush; volcanic hazards; Geovetenskap med inriktning mot mineralogi; petrologi och tektonik; Earth Science with specialization in Mineral Chemistry; Petrology and Tectonics;

    Abstract : Silicic magma in the shallow crust has the potential to violently erupt, depending on its ability to release overpressures caused by magmatic volatiles (outgassing). Deformation-induced outgassing is prevalent along volcanic conduit margins, where ascending magma is sheared at high rates. READ MORE

  5. 5. Application of Passive DOAS using Scattered Sunlight for quantification of gas emissions from anthropogenic and volcanic sources

    Author : Claudia Rivera; Chalmers tekniska högskola; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; nitrogen dioxide; DOAS; gas emission; sulphur dioxide; volcanic; formaldehyde.; scattered sunlight; anthropogenic;

    Abstract : Monitoring of gas emissions from natural and anthropogenic sources is important due to the negative effects of these emissions on human health, atmospheric quality and ecosystems. Concern over air pollution has increased the need to develop measurement techniques suitable for gas flux determination. READ MORE
