6. Modeling and Control of VSC-HVDC Transmissions
Abstract : Presently power systems are being operated under high stress level conditions unforeseen at the moment they were designed. These operating conditions have negatively impacted reliability, controllability and security margins. FACTS devices and HVDC transmissions have emerged as solutions to help power systems to increase the stability margins. READ MORE

7. Wind Power - Added Value for Network Operation
Abstract : This dissertation deals with the investigation on different value added properties of variable speed wind turbines (VSWT) that stem from the flexible controllability of converter interfaced wind turbines (WT). Improvements in voltage and transient stability of a nearby grid, small-signal stability improvement on the power system, frequency control support for the network operation, as well as thetechnical and the economic issues related to the reactive power ancillary service provision, are among the issues covered. 8. A Multichoice Control Strategy for a VSC-HVdc
Abstract : Utilization of power electronics based controllable systems (or devices) in transmission systems has opened new opportunities for the power industry to optimize utilization of the existing transmission systems, and at the same time to keep high system reliability and security. As a member of these controllable systems, Voltage Source Converters-based High Voltage direct current (VSC-HVdc) systems have the ability to rapidly control the transmitted active power, and also to independently exchange reactive power with transmissions systems. 9. On the robust stability analysis of VSC-HVDC systems
Abstract : This thesis focuses on small signal stability analysis of VSC-HVDC systems, emphasizing the system stability robustness with regard to the connected AC-grid and the distributed parameter DC-grid model respectively. In addition, for strong AC-grid connected systems, analytical eigenvalue expressions are provided to investigate the impact of physical or control parameters on the system stability for both two-terminal and multi-terminal VSC-HVDC systems. 10. Modeling of Modular Multilevel Converters for Stability Analysis
Abstract : Modular multilevel converters (MMCs) have recently become the state-of-the-art solution for various grid-connected applications, such as high-voltage direct current (HVDC) systems and flexible alternating current transmission systems (FACTS). Modularity, scalability, low power losses, and low harmonic distortion are the outstanding properties that make MMCs a key technology for a sustainable future. READ MORE
