  1. 1. Ethanol-mediated effects on astroglial cells in primary culture. With a focus on acute changes in intracellular Ca2+, cell volume, actin filaments, and gap junction coupling

    Author : Louise Adermark; Göteborgs universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; astrocyte; BaCl2; cell swelling; fura-2; furosemide; ouabain; scrape loading; volume estimation;

    Abstract : The astroglial cells are abundant in the central nervous system (CNS), where they control and regulate the homeostasis of the extracellular milieu. A change in astroglial cell volume, mediated through activation of neuroactive substances or changes in osmolarity, leads to changes in the size and geometry of the extracellular space volume, which could affect the diffusion and concentration of neuroactive substances. 2. 2. Development of a thin, soft, single segment conductance catheter for monitoring left ventricular pressure and volume

    Author : Camilla Carlsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : Left ventricular function; Left ventricular volume; Conductance catheter; Segment volume;

    Abstract : Knowledge of the leftventricular (LV) pressure-volume relation, along withparameters derived from this relation, have led to newpossibilities for the characterisation of cardiac pumpfunction, in both experimental studies and clinicalsettings.The pressure-volume diagram is apowerful tool for visualising LV performance, but in order tobe clinically useful it is necessary to make plots continuouslyand on-line. 3. 3. Hemodynamic and cardiometabolic studies in patients with distributive circulatory dysfunctions : with special reference to the effects of the beta-1-adrenoreceptor agonist prenalterol

    Author : Sebastian Reiz; Umeå universitet; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; aortic aneurysm surgery; gram negative septic shock; hemodynamics; myocardial metabolism; thermodilution; thoracic epidural block; volume loading; prenalterol;

    Abstract : A total of 49 patients were studied, using invasive hemodynamic techniques with systemic arterial, pulmonary artery and right atrial pressure recordings together with thermodilution cardiac output determinations. Sixteen of the patients were also subjected to cardiometabolic studies, using measurement of coronary sinus blood flow by the continuous thermodilution technique and analyses of oxygen content and lactate concentration in the systemic and coronary circulation. 4. 4. Effects of loading mechanisms and texture on ore breakage – A multidimensional study

    Author : Parisa Semsari Parapari; Magnus Evertsson; Luleå tekniska universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Breakage mechanism; Loading mechanism; Ore texture; Liberation; Comminution; Mineralteknik; Mineral Processing;

    Abstract :  In comminution machines, the product properties (particle size distribution, mineral liberation characteristics) and process consumables (energy for size reduction, wear) are affected by various parameters. On the one hand, understanding and optimizing these parameters can provide an energy efficient process and a specified product. READ MORE

  5. 5. Foam, Fire and Free Volume - Chemical and Physical Aspects of Porous Polymers

    Author : Anna Andersson; Centrum för analys och syntes; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Poisson ratio; vibration damping; acoustic impedance; cell morphology; hyperbranched polymer; Polymer foams; free volume; positron annihilation; supercritical fluid.;

    Abstract : Automotive seating has been under continous development since it was described for the first time in 1885. At that time one could read about a “padded leather bench seat sitting on springs mounted directly to the frame of a horse-less carriage”. READ MORE
