  1. 1. Lung volumes and lung mechanics in anesthetized children

    Author : Adalbjörn Thorsteinsson; Anestesiologi och intensivvård; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; sulfur hexafluoride; Anaesthesiology; lung volumes; lung compliance; Anesthesia: pediatric; functional residual capacity; intensive care; Anestesiologi; ventilation inhomogeneity; intensivvård; airway closure;

    Abstract : The thesis was intended to fill gaps in the knowledge regarding the normal development of lung volumes and lung mechanics in children, from young infancy to the mid-teens. In particular, data were previously lacking regarding pre-school children. The studies were done during anesthesia and muscle relaxation. READ MORE

  3. 3. Three-dimensional assessment of cardiac function; When right is wrong

    Author : Ellen Ostenfeld; Lund Klinisk fysiologi; []
    Keywords : MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; MEDICIN OCH HÄLSOVETENSKAP; MEDICAL AND HEALTH SCIENCES; Key words Three-dimensional echocardiography; cardiac magnetic resonance imaging; cardiac function; volumes; atria; ventricles; pulmonary hypertension; right heart catheterization; right ventricular pressure load.;

    Abstract : Assessment of the right side of the heart is important in patients with heart disease; especially in patient with elevated pressure in the lung circulation. Decreased right ventricular function and elevated pressure in the right atrium are of poor prognostic value. READ MORE

  4. 4. The aging brain and changes in cognitive performance : Findings from morphometry and quantitative susceptibility mapping of iron

    Author : Ninni Persson; Håkan Fischser; Kristine B. Walhovd; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : SOCIAL SCIENCES; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SAMHÄLLSVETENSKAP; SOCIAL SCIENCES; brain aging; volumes; ndividual differences; QSM; cognitive aging; iron; episodic memory; fluid-; crystalized abilities; sex differences; gender differences; psykologi; Psychology;

    Abstract : Brain aging is a heterogeneous phenomenon, and this thesis illustrates how the course of aging can vary within individuals over time and between individuals as a function of age, sex, and genetic variability. We used two contrasts from magnetic resonance imaging (MRI), namely spin-lattice T1-weighted imaging, and quantitative susceptibility mapping (QSM) from gradient-echo images, to picture the aging brain, by means of morphometric measures and brain-iron concentrations. 5. 5. Determination of absorbed dose in fields of fast neutrons

    Author : Anders Montelius; Stockholms universitet; []
    Keywords : NATURAL SCIENCES; NATURVETENSKAP; Neutron dosimetry; finite volumes; interface effects; marrow dose; chord length distributions;

    Abstract : Analytical models have been developed to solve energy deposition problems in finite detectors and near interfaces in beams of fast neutrons. Dose expressions have been derived, which are suitable for numerical evaluation. The detectors or volumes of interest have been characterized by distributions of chord length along which the particles travel. READ MORE
