  1. 1. Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome : pathophysiology of the vestibular mucosa

    Author : Nina Bohm-Starke; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Vulvar vestibulitis syndrome; immunohistochemistry; QST; COX 2; NOS; laser Doppler perfusion imaging; intraepithelial nerve fibres; pain thresholds; sensory stimulation.;

    Abstract : Objective: The main purpose of the study was to survey possible pathophysiological changes of the vestibular mucosa in women with vulvar vestibulitis syndrome with regard to the clinical findings of superficial dyspareunia and mucosal erythema. Methods: Biopsies analysed with immunohistochemistry were used to study the morphology, distribution and neuropeptide content of the peripheral nerves, and the microvascularisation of the vestibular mucosa. 2. 2. Combined oral contraceptives : impact on the vulvar vestibular mucosa and pain mechanisms

    Author : Ulrika Johannesson; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : combined oral contraceptives; quantitative sensory testing; pain thresholds; DNIC; endogenous; pain modulation; provoked vestibulodynia; vulvar vestibulitis syndrome; morphology; vulvar mucosa; steroid receptors;

    Abstract : Objective: The main aim of this thesis was to study the impact of combined oral contraceptives (COC) on the vulvar vestibular mucosa and pain mechanisms; in healthy women and in women with provoked vestibulodynia (former vulvar vestibulitis syndrome). The somatosensory perception in the vulvar vestibular mucosa of healthy women was studied with the relation to COC. READ MORE

  3. 3. Aspects on chronic stress and glucose metabolism in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis and in women with localized provoked vulvodynia

    Author : Sophia Ehrström; Karolinska Institutet; Karolinska Institutet; []
    Keywords : Recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis; localized provoked vulvodynia ; vulvar vestibulitis syndrome; Hypothalamus Pituitary Adrenal-axis; salivary cortisol; chronic stress; morning awakening cortisol; oral glucose tolerance testing; glucose in vaginal secretions; plasma glucose; body mass index;

    Abstract : Objective: To evaluate the degree of stress in women with recurrent vulvovaginal candidiasis (RVVC) and in women with localized provoked vulvodynia (LPV) (former vulvar vestibulitis syndrome) compared with controls. To measure the change of glucose in plasma and in vaginal secretions during oral glucose tolerance testing (OGTT) in women with RVVC, and in healthy control subjects. READ MORE
