1. Composition of lignin in outer cell-wall layers
Abstract : The composition of lignin in the outer cell-wall layers of spruce and poplar has been studied and the data obtained have been compared with those of the mature reference wood in which the secondary cell wall predominates. Materials with exclusively or predominantly outer cell-wall layers were examined. READ MORE

2. Solids Flow Pattern in Circulating Fluidized-bed Boilers
Abstract : The background of this dissertation is the knowledge of circulating fluidized bed (CFB)technology, which has reached a level enabling units of several hundred megawatts ofelectricity to be constructed and employed. Yet an improved understanding of the technologyis needed in order to further develop and optimize large-scale combustion in CFB boilers, especially since the operating conditions and the geometries of large boilers differ from thosetypical for laboratory units, in which most of the research hitherto has been performed. 3. Cellular Control and Physiological Importance of Vascular Lignification
Abstract : Lignin is indispensable for vascular plants. It allows their cells to coalesce into gravity-defying giants, hardens them to withstand pressures and predators, and waterproofs them to allow the flow of water only where it is advantageous. READ MORE

4. Carotid Artery Wall Layer Dimensions during and after Pre-eclampsia : An investigation using non-invasive high-frequency ultrasound
Abstract : Pre-eclampsia is associated with increased risk of cardiovascular disease (CVD) later in life. The ‘gold standard’ for estimating cardiovascular risk - ultrasound assessment of the common carotid artery intima-media thickness (CCA-IMT) - does not convincingly demonstrate this increased risk. 5. Artery Wall Imaging and Effects of Postmenopausal Estrogen Therapy
Abstract : Postmenopausal estrogen therapy, initiated early in the menopause, seems to protect against development of atherosclerosis and cardiovascular diseases. This thesis concerns studies of artery wall thickness and arterial stiffness estimated by noninvasive ultrasound techniques in long-term estrogen treated postmenopausal women who initiated therapy at the time of the menopause.
