1. Storage of Hydrogen Peroxide Bleached Mechanical Pulp : Reduction in Reflectance over the Visible Spectrum
Abstract : The objective of this thesis is to determine possible causes of the darkening of hydrogen peroxide bleached mechanical pulp over the visible spectrum and their relative contributions. It focuses on both process conditions and the composition of the pulp and the dilution water, including additions or losses of material along the process line from the bleach tower to the paper machine. 2. Influence of acid hydrogen peroxide treatment on refining energy and TMP properties
Abstract : The potential of using acid hydrogen peroxide under Fenton conditions to lower the electrical energy consumed during the production of Black spruce (Picea mariana) thermomechanical pulp (TMP) was investigated. The chemical system, which consisted of ferrous sulphate, hydrogen peroxide and optionally an enhancer (3,4-dimethoxybenzyl alcohol, ethylenediaminetetraacetic acid or oxalic acid/sodium oxalate), was evaluated as an inter-stage treatment where the primary refiner was used as a mixer. 3. Continuous Preventive Bridge Maintenance : Effect of High Pressure Washing on Concrete Bridges
Abstract : In Sweden, as in many other countries, preventive maintenance of structures andbridges is considered important. It provides several benefits such as prolonged lifespan or service life, less need for repair, and hopefully reduced costs and lowerenvironmental impact.A large part of Sweden’s bridge stock is getting quite old. 4. Remediation of materials with mixed contaminants : treatability, technology and final disposal
Abstract : Contaminated soils are a large issue worldwide and much effort has been made to find efficient remediation methods. At many contaminated sites, mixtures of different contaminants with different properties are present, which may lead to additional problems, and thus additional costs, during the remediation process. 5. Towards sustainability of environmental protection : recovery of nutrients from wastewater filtration and the washing of arsenic contaminated soils
Abstract : Conventional methods for wastewater treatment and remediation of the sites withcontaminated soils focus on protection of human health, receiving waters and theenvironment. Towards this end, these methods concentrate on the reduction or removal of polluting substances, and therefore, are not well suited for creating resources through the recovery of nutrients, energy and decontaminated soils.
