21. Biogeochemical evidences of human intervention in a shallow lake, Zeekoevlei, South Africa
Abstract : This thesis describes a multi-parameter biogeochemical investigation in a shallow hyper-eutrophic freshwater coastal lake, Zeekoevlei, in South Africa. The predominance of autochthonous algal-derived organic matter in lake sediments is indicated by low C/N, high H/C ratios and δ13Corganic values. READ MORE

22. "Under pressure" : interaction between pharmaceuticals and river bacteria
Abstract : Pharmaceuticals are often entering the environment without being completely decomposed. Once released in the environment they continue to carry on their main function but instead targeting the inhabitants of the aquatic ecosystem. Our interest was drawn towards the bacteria, that are often present in the environment in the form of biofilms. READ MORE

23. Bioethanol Production: Pretreatment and Enzymatic Hydrolysis of Softwood
Abstract : The enzymatic hydrolysis process can be used to produce bioethanol from softwood, which are the dominating raw material in the Northern hemisphere. This thesis deals with the development of the process focusing on the pretreatment and the enzymatic hydrolysis stages. READ MORE

24. Role of plants in treating metal-polluted waters in wetlands
Abstract : The overall aim of this thesis was to evaluate the role of wetland plants in wetland treatment of metal-polluted waters. The specific aims were to investigate metal uptake in various wetland plant species; whether and how wetland plants tolerate high metal concentrations in their immediate surroundings, and how the pH and metal concentrations of polluted waters influence metal uptake in wetland plants were also investigated. 25. Organic Phosphorus Compounds in Aquatic Sediments : Analysis, Abundance and Effects
Abstract : Phosphorus (P) is often the limiting nutrient in lacustrine and brackish eco-systems, and enhanced input of P into an aquatic system might therefore negatively impact the environment. Because modern waste water manage-ment have reduced external P input to surface waters, internal P loading from the sediment has become one of the main P sources to aquatic ecosys-tems, in which relatively unknown organic P compounds seem to be more active in P recycling than previously thought.
