6. Protein structures and protein-solvent interactions : development and application of methods in high-resloultion nuclear magnetic resonance spectroscopy
Abstract : Nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy in solution was used for the structural characterization of the proteins glutaredoxin-3 and flavodoxin from E. coli. A new NMR technique for the measurement of three-bond a proton-amide proton scalar coupling constants was developed. READ MORE

7. Heme A synthase from Bacillus subtilis and Aeropyrum pernix
Abstract : Respiration in animals, plants and many bacteria is dependent on heme A, which functions as a prosthetic group in a-type cytochromes (terminal energy-transducing oxidases in the electron transport chain that reduce molecular oxygen to water). Heme A synthase catalyses a chemically very demanding reaction, the conversion of one specific methyl side-group of heme O to a formyl group of heme A. READ MORE

8. Integration of Aqueous Two-Phase Systems into Recovery Processes for Biomolecules
Abstract : The main scope of this thesis has been to study and develop new purification methods and also to further develop existing methods for purification to enhance their efficacy. Important parameters in the development of the methods are that they should be suitable for scale-up and possible to be integrated into recovery processes. READ MORE

9. An Alkaline Active Endo-Xylanase from Bacillus halodurans S7:Molecular and Structural Aspects
Abstract : A strain of an alkaliphilic bacterium Bacillus halodurans was isolated from a water sample in Lake Shalla, a soda lake in the Ethiopian Rift Valley. From the culture of this isolate, B. halodurans S7, a xylanase which is active in a wide range of pH, with an optimum at about 9-9.5 was purified. READ MORE

10. Nucleotide-binding Proteins in the Plant Thylakoid Membrane
Abstract : Life on Earth is dependent on the oxygen produced through photosynthesis. The thylakoid membrane is the site for the light-driven reactions of photosynthesis, which oxidize water and supply energy in the form of ATP, mainly for carbon fixation. The utilization of ATP in the lumenal space of the thylakoid has not been considered in the past. READ MORE
