  1. 21. Polymer Nanocomposites in Thin Film Applications

    Author : Linda Fogelström; Anders Hult; José M. Kenny; KTH; []
    Keywords : NATURVETENSKAP; NATURAL SCIENCES; Nanocomposites; hyperbranched polymers; montmorillonite; clay nanoparticles; exfoliated; coatings; crosslinking; TEM; XRD; mechanical properties; thermal properties; cellulose nanofibers; Atom Transfer Radical Polymerization; Ring-Opening Polymerization; poly ε-caprolactone ; surface modification; grafting; interfacial adhesion; Polymer chemistry; Polymerkemi;

    Abstract : The introduction of a nanoscopic reinforcing phase to a polymer matrix offers great possibilities of obtaining improved properties, enabling applications outside the boundaries of traditional composites. The majority of the work in this thesis has been devoted to polymer/clay nanocomposites in coating applications, using the hydroxyl-functional hyperbranched polyester Boltorn® as matrix and montmorillonite clay as nanofiller. 3. 23. Influence of Water on Coarse Granular Road Material Properties

    Author : Jonas Ekblad; Ulf Isacsson; Hervé Di Benedetto; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Highway Engineering; Granulat materials; Civil engineering and architecture; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract : Even though the practical experience of using coarse unbound granular materials is extensive, detailed knowledge on the mechanical and hydraulic behavior is to a large extent lacking. Regarding influence of water on mechanical properties, this is even more pronounced. READ MORE

  4. 24. Condensation and frost formation in fibrous thermal-insulation materials

    Author : Tomáš Vrána; Folke Björk; Ove Söderström; Kjartan Gudmundsson; Carsten Rode; KTH; []

    Abstract : Heavily insulated constructions are at present being used to strike at the vast energy consumption in residential buildings and commercial alike. They introduce a high-thickness layer of thermal insulation in the building envelopes. READ MORE

  5. 25. Geotechnical Aspects of Buildings on Expansive Soils in Kibaha, Tanzania

    Author : Charles Lucian; Staffan Hintze; Sven Knutsson; KTH; []
    Keywords : TEKNIK OCH TEKNOLOGIER; ENGINEERING AND TECHNOLOGY; Expansive soils; soil properties; potential swell; smectite montmorillonite ; multivariate statistics; geo-statistics; spatial variability; lightweight structures; Civil engineering and architecture; Samhällsbyggnadsteknik och arkitektur;

    Abstract :  The focus of this study is on potential damages to buildings resulting from expansive soils in Tanzania, particularly clay soils in Kibaha. For the fact that most of the affected structures are founded on expansive soils, a clear understanding of the behaviour of soils and their interaction with structures has been of interest to the study in order to evaluate properly the source of the problem.
